DB Eugene Clifford (official thread)

Clifford may turn out to be a good WR, but right now he does not have game breaking speed. He has decent north south speed, but he loses a lot of speed when he has to make a move laterally. The strength right now is his awareness and his leap. Also attacks the ball well every off his hips. I think he's going to be a very nice safety for us here.

I am going to have to disagree with your opinion that Eugene doesn't have game breaking speed. I've seen him run away from phenomenal talent in SWO without breaking a sweat. (EJ and Brandon Underwood, Adam Myers-Hype from Hamilton and Amos from Middletown to name a few)...

I can see your point about slowing down to make cuts and not re-accelerating to top speed quickly, however...but if you watch closely, Gene is slowing down to deliever a blow when he has the ball...he's not looking to run out of bounds.

I believe Clifford will be a WR...his hands are too good and his leap and awareness, as you stated, are excellent and should be harnessed.

My comment about Clifford not having "game-breaking" speed yet is certainly not meant to antagonize anyone. Ted Ginn Jr. has "game-breaking" speed. Percy Harvin has "game-breaking" speed. Clifford has excellent north-south speed, but is not the same same game breaker yet as the two previously mentioned.

What Clifford does have is great size, leaping ability and awareness. Plenty of WRs with those characteristics have evolved into gamebreakers without necessarily having "game-breaking" speed. However, with the lack of depth at safety next season, especially before Russell is 100%, Clifford may have to be thrown into that position first. And who knows, he might even start.

Sorry, didn't realize we were not allowed to ask an UC question. Wasn't trying to bait anything.

You are allowed to ask A UC questions, but not AN UC question.

Looks like Clifford is sticking with OSU. Good decision for Clifford, OSU and UC (in the long run).
