DB Corey "Pittsburgh" Brown (DB Coach Slippery Rock Univ.)

One of the things I like about WRs who play CB is that their mindset and expectation is geared towards catching the ball rather than just tipping it or knocking it down. It seems as if they feel deprived of their entitled touches and want to make up for it by taking matters into their own hands. They also tend to turn an INT into an even bigger play. Guys like Gamble and Deion were scary for QBs not only for their coverage skills, but also for the strong chance that they'd take it for a pick six.

If Brown does play CB here, he's going to be a real playmaker. 8-)

Brown and Bell were no package deal, but "it's crazy, because we all wanted to play at one of the best schools in the country, and Ohio State obviously is one of the best schools," Brown said yesterday.

According to Rivals.com, Brown is the top prospect in the 2009 class and rated 31st overall nationally. Bell is 33rd. The funny thing about Brown is that no one is sure whether he will be a receiver or a cornerback in college.

"I'm playing either/or," Brown said. "I want to find the position that gets me on the field the fastest. Coach (Jim) Tressel said the first week of camp I could go to receiver or go to corner, whatever I like, or if they really need me at one of those, I'll go there."

What position is in his heart?

"In my heart? I like receiver," Brown said. "I didn't start playing corner until my junior year because they needed me to do it."

But he said there is no denying Bell is a linebacker to the core.

"What stands out about him is his attitude toward the game. He is a feisty linebacker," Brown said. "He likes to be the best at whatever he does."

I may be more excited about Corey than any other commit. He's a kid who looks to be able to make an impact on either side of the ball. Does anybody else see another Chris Gamble here? Maybe not as much, but I could see Corey being a CB who sees snaps on offense. If he goes full WR, I think he stays there.

Highlight reel jumpball touchdown in the US Army All-American Game says he may see a snap or two on offense as well during his career at Ohio State whilst playing primarily CB.

Yeah, and when you think of our depth at WR Vs. DB...

Unless he has Ginn style downfield speed, I don't see him playing much WR. (In which case, you just play him both ways.)

As good as Brown could be at WR, I think he could be a shutdown, game changing DB, with his ball skills (unless QB's are afraid to throw at him) he could really pile up the picks, even the pick 6's.

JT has been known to switch guys around though as we saw with Gonzo and Ginn though, so as the defacto Offensive Coordinator, maybe Tress will want Corey on the offensive side of the ball, either way it will be great to see Corey in S&G.

Penn State called Gateway coach Terry Smith before practice Tuesday and said it was offering scholarships to receiver-defensive back Corey Brown (6 feet 1, 185 pounds) and linebacker Dorian Bell (6-2, 215). Pitt, Ohio State, Michigan and Alabama already had offered scholarships to both.

"They both have about 12 offers already," Smith said.

Smith believes both Brown and Bell could be ranked among the top 50 players in the country next year.
From the initial post in this thread; the date of the article is August 17, 2007.

Brown was ranked #31 in the country by Rivals, and Bell #33.

Dre Kirkpatrick, the nation's No. 1 cornerback prospect, came down with nothing but air. Corey Brown had the ball and six points.

Kirkpatrick is headed to Alabama, Brown to Ohio State and, in all likelihood, Kirkpatrick's side of the ball.

Indefinable by ESPN's standards, Brown is labeled an "athlete."

Splitting time between wide receiver and cornerback for Gateway High School in Monroeville, Pa., Brown caught 15 touchdowns with two interceptions in 2008.

His postseason tour further muddled the situation.

A three-interception performance at the Hawaii Prep Football Classic was backed by the elastic-arms effort over Kirkpatrick on offense at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

"At the Army All-American Bowl he was one of the best receivers on the East squad, showing the ability to go up in the air, get the football in traffic, run good routes, show good speed and with good hands," said Mike Farrell, recruiting analyst for rivals.com, in a video on the Web site. "He's going to be an impact guy no matter what position he plays at the next level."

At 6 feet, 1 inch, Brown has the requisite size for both positions. His future will be largely determined by how Ohio State's coaches can get him on the field, said Kevin Noon, managing editor of ohiostate.rivals.com.

Brown is definately an example of a Chris Gamble! He is going to be an offensive weapon for sure! And i can put money on it that he will be returning punts as well. He has lots of speed! If you watch his highschool highlight film he has exceptional footwork and great breakaway speed and amazing hands! I guarantee he will start on both sides of the ball.

I don't know if I think he'll play both sides of the ball when the season comes around, he should find a position by then. And I don't see him on special teams personally, with the likes of Flash Thomas, James Jackson, Jamal Berry, Chris Fields and Ray Small all viable options in the return. I'm not saying Brown isn't good enough, he's my favorite player in this class, but we have the good problem of not needing him to play special teams and focus on either defense or offense.

Yeah! i agree with that but it wont hurt to have him do both! A good example of how we need to use him is the same way Florida used Percy Harvin. The defense was always guessing where he was going to line up next. I think if Tressel can use him like that it will work out well. Kids and athlete let him touch the ball as much as possible.
