DB Cameron Martinez (transfer to Boston College)

This kid has a hard decision in front of him and for him to do that, Northwestern really made a compelling case for themselves. They are in dire need an athlete like Martinez where as we can easily replace him with a guy just as good or better

Honestly, how big of a difference does a Northwestern degree vs Ohio State degree matter when we are talking football players. Maybe if we are talking about Joe Blow in law school it makes a difference, but an Ohio State football player is going to have so many avenues opened to him by virtue of being an Ohio State football player that a normal student isn't going to have. In my opinion it takes away any advantage a Northwestern degree would have

Well, combine that with the fact that Fitz basically told him that he’ll design packages around him in three phases of the game... the NWU degree and being the Big Dog should sound pretty appealing. While I know that there are other athletes who have had packages designed like this for them, I think that Cam is far more likely to be able to pull it off than other salient examples (e.g. tsun player who had a single career interception and was really good at breaking his ankles when a QB throws a single juke at him... you know who I’m talking about.)

Only thing with that "design packages" business is.. well.. Northwestern's offense isn't exactly a juggernaut. To be sure, they could certainly use a talent like Martinez... but.. do they know how to use said talent? That's my question.

That’s almost a given, right? I can design a ton of plays around any player, but I need 10 other guys doing what they do better than the competition does what it does in order for that one player to shine in that package I created.

I am not convinced that Fitz has the 10 other guys in any phase of the game that he can reliably make it work.

NWU sheepskin is nice tho.

Well, we've got most of the class signed up. We can focus on Martinez and we'll have a position coach lined up well before he signs. If we happen to persuade who is supposedly our top choice to come back (Coombs), he did quite a bit of damage recruiting in that state up north and would be his position coach. Regardless, I'm not losing faith on this one yet.

Yeah, football players are dummies and never major in tough degrees...

Yeah, pretty sure you missed his point. We have "Real Life Wednesdays", which I'm sure you're aware of. That's not part of a degree program; it's part of the Ohio State football program. It helped guys like Hubbard, Burrow, and Mack land internships at Goldman Sachs. Ohio State football opens up amazing non-football careers too, just like Northwestern. Thus negating a lot of the perceived Ivy league advantage. I think that was his point, not "jocks are dumb." Btw, Ohio State is a fine university in its own right with it's own tough degrees.

You know for a fact that Northwestern doesn't have something similar to "Real Life Wednesdays"? And I'm fairly sure that a world-class program like Northwestern has similar internships to top-flight organizations. Northwestern is ranked #9 of all universities in the country (#1 in the conference), while Ohio State is #54 (#5 in conference, behind Northwestern, scUM, Wisconsin, and Illinois). While Ohio State is in indeed an excellent university, you really can't compare degrees between Northwestern and Ohio State.

You can't compare them if you're not a student-athlete. If you are a student athlete, especially a football athlete, that Ohio State degree will open up so many doors due to national fanbase and fandom. Being a former Northwestern football player isn't the same thing as a former Buckeye in terms of national name recognition and team support.

I'm not talking about "national name recognition and team support", I'm talking about having a world-class degree that will likely get your resume looked at a lot more being a former member of a football team.

There's nothing wrong with a degree from either school. However, (realistically) when you want to enlist the services of someone in a profession that requires a degree do you first screen them by where their degree is from? Do you actually know or even care where your doctor or dentist graduated from? In addition, I'll wager the internships and/or "job fairs" at Northwestern aren't any better than the ones available at Ohio State in getting your "foot in the door" for employment after you graduate. Depending on the degree and/or field you are in, there are some employers that might prefer a degree from one school over another; but other factors like the interview, references, grades, personality, and/or other intangibles could over ride where your degree is from too. With that being said, I do know there are companies in Ohio that have a "track record" of hiring football players from Ohio State (with a degree).
