It's official, I'm on the Indy bandwagon -- and to think I was rooting against them in the super bowl.
Not only did they pick up a lot of Buckeyes, but they got some of my favorites -- these were all very hard-working standup kids at Ohio State and I'm happy to see them get their dues at the next level.

Jessica Davenport, Antonio Smith Among Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Winners

A total of 269 student-athletes honored throughout the academic year

Park Ridge, Ill. - The Big Ten today recognized 22 student-athletes who were named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners. These individuals were chosen from a group of 269 student-athletes honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by the institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree and from each university's list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, theses student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
The 22 Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners include 17 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and 11 All-Big Ten selections from the 2006-07 season. In addition, Ohio State women's basketball standout Jessica Davenport claimed her third consecutive Big Ten Player of the Year accolade in 2007, while Wisconsin's Joe Detmer was named the Field Athlete of the Year for the indoor season.

Smith Addresses Group

Former Buckeye Antonio Smith was once recognized as one of the high school scholar-athletes at this banquet. He was first recognized in 2002 as a scholar from Columbus Beechcroft High School.

That fall, he started a five-year stint at OSU as a walk-on. But he worked his way up the line and completed his career as an All-Big Ten defensive back in 2006. After graduating in 2007 with a degree in mechanical engineering, the 2006 OSU Bo Rein Award winner spent last season with the NFL?s Indianapolis Colts. (He spent the year on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury.)

He addressed the group on perseverance.

Former Buckeye aims to give back

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Whether he's done with football or not, Antonio Smith says he will never be finished giving back.

The former Beechcroft and Ohio State defensive back is the founder and president of the All Out Foundation, a newly formed nonprofit group dedicated to tackling issues important to central Ohio.

"I've been blessed to be able to have the opportunities I've had," he said. "Giving back is an essential part of life."

Smith walked on at Ohio State in 2002. He eventually earned a scholarship, then enjoyed a storybook senior season in 2006 when he became a starter, was a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award (given to the nation's best defensive back) and played in the national championship game.

He spent 2007 on injured reserve with the Indianapolis Colts. He was released last fall and was briefly with the Detroit Lions.

He said he has not closed the book on continuing his football career, "if the right situation comes along," but he's not waiting around for that by any means.
