Agree completely
And tOSU has a chance to do that this year
Yeah, can't knock an OL for picking Bama right now and none of this post is directed at you in the slightest (just responding through a reply), but this one stings even if we were not out in the lead just because we needed an OT like Alinen in this class and now I doubt that happens. We can certainly have two guys borderline 1st round picks in PJ Jr and Dawand (PJ will be unless he is a dumpster fire this year imo because of the measurables and ability, Dawand I think needs to show he can protect the edge in pass pro to warrant a high pick despite his ratings from last year), but I have been preaching that tune for awhile now it seems. Thought NPF and Munford were both sure-fire 1st round guys heading into last year...3rd and 7th rounds respectively. That trend cannot continue if we want to land guys like Alinen out of state. We did need one more top-shelf OT and that ship has seemed to sail with Alinen unless there is someone we don't know about yet or we get someone to flip...in that same vein, I would imagine we end up with some 3* to fill the gap. And maybe they will be Thayer Munford or Dawand Jones (Dawand was a notorious last second add because we missed on everyone else, and Munford was incredible here)...or they will be Ryan Jacoby or Kevin Feder. It has been said on here a million times, but the OL position is tough to predict in recruiting.
With that out of my system, Frye did seem to keep us in it for Alinen and we have a good OL class already committed with our Ohio guys even though losing this one doesn't feel good. Montgomery is a monster and great athlete, Padilla is just a tough-nosed interior guy that will destroy people in the trenches, and Siereveld is a big dude with a LOT of upside that could end up being the best in the bunch honestly. I could see Montgomery and Siereveld being great tackles, but I think fans have tunnel-vision on their height. And last year? Hinzman could be a legit 3-year starter on the interior, and Tshabola to me is going to be a monster at RT that was vastly underrated. Now I get that there were some "Plan B or C" type of guys we took on the OL in the last few cycles and I don't want to sound like a fanboy here, but that starting OL (Montgomery, Padilla, Hinzman, Siereveld, Tshabola) in the next 2-4 years sounds pretty darn good on paper. Depth could end up being an issue based on injuries, development, etc., but I really don't see our OL recruiting as being so dire as some seem to be suggesting. Plus you are one transfer portal guy away from fixing the issue at OT...not the way you want to plan a team, I get that and hope we find a really solid OL later in the game like we did with Hinzman last year, but it is a viable alternative now.
That was a really long-winded way of saying not landing Alinen hurts, don't sugarcoat it (same goes for Tackett Curtis)...but folks seem to dwell on the ones we don't get and forget about the ones we did get. Think about the ones we did get, because they are very good.
