It's not about middle class vs poor (at least in my mind). It's about taking unemployment from 3.5% to possibly 20 something %.

They have decided to intentionally do economic, mental and physical harm to a larger number of Americans than the virus would have killed if left to run its course. They have committed this intentional act with no tangible proof that their actions would deliver the desired result or save any lives.

They did it so they could not be accused of "doing nothing" and looking bad on social media in the fall. They probably assume that the bankrupted folks won't hold them (the elected officials) accountable for their panicked and poorly thought out decisions.

I'd also note that people losing their loved ones sooner than they thought they would to this (or going bankrupt due to costs of treatment) is also stressful and has indirect health effects. Lots of consequences and difficult choices.

EDIT: based on Jax's follow up post.

Yes, my opinions are biased against politicians. They are a step below a Jihadi and on equal footing with tsun fans in my personal hierarchy of people who are lower than whale shit.

Have you ever worked with them? I do, on a daily basis, albeit at the state level not the federal level. What I tell people is that they are generally "representative" in that there are good ones, bad ones, and a lot of mediocre ones and that if you give me some very basic demographic information about the districts they come from I can pretty much tell you what they're like. Individually, most of them (at least before they get too much power by being a U.S .Senator or something) are not really bad people, but the structure of the system and the larger environment separates them into warring tribes. I say of Trump, "He's not the herpes, he's the cold sore" but that's true of the political class as a whole IMO. There's no way I can convey this all in a post. Perhaps over beers if I can get to Indy this fall.

I've met a few. Love to hear war stories though.

My impression is that they are like actors but only worse. Sad, empty creatures who need the outsized limelight to try and fill the cavernous hole in themselves. Pathological narcissists.

The people they supposedly work for are just objects to manipulate to get what they want for themselves.

Still just playing out the other side, which is: What's new? They do it all the time, just not on such a grandiose scale. Mandatory paid sick leave? Hell, no. Maternity leave? Fuck off with that nonsense. Increase the minimum wage? Nah, market sets the "fair" wage. Pregnant with a kid you can't possibly afford to birth or raise? Suck it up, slut. Start another stupid war? Hell, yeah!

I'm probably (definitely) trending in a direction that belongs in the poli-forum so I'll cut it there and say this:

If you are fortunate to NOT be terribly economically harmed by this, help wherever and however you can. Support your local food banks, help out a neighbor that can't get out of the house, share with those who don't have enough. Suspend your judgment and do some good in the world, regardless of whether or not they "deserve" it. Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind.

If we are all relying on the government to save us, we are definitely properly fucked, so let's make that need for governmental help as minimal as possible.
