Try not to consider the possibility where the trolley switch splits it in half.

Make a decision I guess. Not everyone is going to like it.

Do you starve a 30 year old mother of 3 so an already sick 85 year old can live a little longer?

Things like that are speeding toward us I fear.

I’d hazard a guess that things like that are already happening in Italy. Almost this exact decision point was a topic of discussion last night with my friend who is a COO of an urgent care company.

It's also something that can be wrongly thought about as a city school problem, when it touches almost all districts. Which gets back to the trolley heading for both groups problem

This is spot on. Our district is one of pretty high affluence. I found it interesting and comforting, quite frankly, that the email from the school district that announced that we were going to online classes for the next few weeks until spring break also included a detailed plan for distribution of school breakfast / lunches. While it likely only impacts a fraction of a percentage of the families in our school district, the email announcement contained a significant amount of detail about this.

I think that its a very good thing that the schools can function as a learning center for most, but for those in need, it can serve as a distribution point for the most basics. I’m thrilled that so many schools are considering this as one of their primary objectives while we sort this out.

Note: Not that I would suggest that you think differently... only stating my thoughts.

Yes. This is one of the 5-10 wealthiest counties in America (or so I am told).

As a vet, seeing children who struggle to get food in the richest country in the world, that so many have fought and died for, just makes my blood boil. One of the main reasons for my hatred of federal government. It's bloated and inefficient (as all bureaucracies become) and that has nothing to do with the political affiliation of the sitting POTUS .

Wastes the wealth it confiscates to the point where children go hungry and yet people still think we need more government in our lives. Turn to the government for every problem that comes up. It's maddening.

(Sorry if I am bordering on the poli board threads again)

Over 50% of our students are free or reduced lunch/breakfast.

It really is sad that this is the only food some of our kids get in a day.:sad2:

We do a lot of work in schools. Sadly, 10 people are on layoff now with the schools closed but this was their biggest concern. They know too many kids for whom breakfast/lunch at school are their only reliable meals.

Well between being old and weak, they... had it coming and it's unfair to count them?

Or do you have a less callous point to make here given asthma making the list of pre-existing qualifications to be deaths without asterisks?

How about all of the non weak, non olds that end up in the hospital for awhile and possibly lose lung function? Where do they fit into the talking points?

I think the mortality rate is much lower than recorded. I think too many on both sides are ignoring the tidal wave of the medium cases that's coming for ALL ages.

It's nothing like that. No one deserves it. No one had it coming and doesn't count without an asterisk.

BUT. It's a simple observation. If you're under 80 and don't smoke three packs a day, you will probably survive. China has ridiculous levels of pollution, so smoking isn't the issue there, but all the pollution and subsequent respiratory issues compounds the situation in much the same way.

Italy has the oldest population in Europe AND they smoke three packs a day.

No one knows the actual number of cases. All we know is the number of CONFIRMED cases, which is a HUGE difference. It's safe to assume that the total number of cases is larger (probably much larger) than the number of confirmed cases.

EVERYONE will be exposed to it. It's just a matter of time. I understand certain measures being taken to increase that time, but shutting down an entire industry, that being Restaurants and Bars, in the state of Ohio, is ludicrous. It's insane. Are they going to shut down grocery stores next? The two Smith's (West coast Kroger) nearest to me are both ALWAYS busy, no matter what time. They're even busier now, thanks to media and State induced paranoia.

What are those millions of people that work in the thousands of restaurants and bars in Ohio going to do to pay their bills? How many small businesses will this decision destroy? How many people will end up homeless because they literally can't go to work, by order of the State? Is it really worth it to sacrifice an entire industry in order to save the very small percentage of the population that is octagenarian and smokes three packs a day?

There's a very serious conversation about shutting the schools down for the rest of the year in Las Vegas, not so much because they're worried about kids being at risk; they are, although the mortality rate is much, MUCH lower than octagenarians that smoke three packs a day, but because so many of the kids get their breakfast and lunch at school. What are those kids going to eat? Who will watch them?

This is some serious shit. I don't disagree that Coronachan is dangerous. But this knee-jerk reaction is FUCKING INSANE.

I'm sorry, but you're still arguing as if people with health problems don't really count.

Surviving is half of the story, and the dangerously deceptive one. Those can be written off as misleading, or threatening the end of lifers. What of the fact that youth and health is no recipe for avoiding the ICU? This country cannot handle that unchecked.

You're raising two major problems. The kinds of things that belong on another board.

It would be nice if we had more leaders like DeWine providing solutions and direction. You can disagree with the severity of his choices but he's leading. That includes with food. Sidenote, that meal problem is an issue this summer regardless of whether school returns. Some churches and community outreach groups try to fill the gap but it's woefully undersupported.

I'm keenly aware of the threat to small businesses. We will have zero income until this ends, and our exploding business will come crumbling down if this does not relent. Like way too many.
