Coronavirus (COVID-19) is too exciting for adults to discuss (CLOSED)

Oh my God, we're all gonna die!

The ENTIRE WORLD has already been exposed to Coronachan. Pick a number between 1-10. What's 10^6? What's 100^6? Hint: it's 10000,000,000,000

Ok, I'm not one to typically be annoyed by stuff like this, but for the love of god, can we please cut it with the derogatory nicknames for COVID-19? At best it's a shitty attempt at derogatory humor, and it's not funny, at all.

On the serious side, I'm starting to get nervous, both personally and for my immediate area. I'm going to be really vulnerable, professionally, if this drags out more than a few extra weeks beyond what was officially announced. However, I still think it was the right call and is necessary (along with the increased measures seen in OH and a few other areas), because clearly people in general can't do it themselves. ETA: I am bracing for what's starting to trickle out of Vegas the last 24 hours to start playing out here. We're probably about a month from that playing out with the big companies, but the smaller chains and independent hotels and such will definitely be feeling it before then.

If it goes more than 2-3 weeks (lockdowns) I don't see how we can avoid this basic conflict.

I think it's important to remember that "flattening the curve" doesn't mean they are saving anyone in the older age group. It means they are trying to delay the inevitable just long enough not to swamp the medical system and kill a bunch of people currently sick from something else.
Kaboom on both points. Went to the commissary today and not only was all the toilet paper gone (it was nowhere near that bad just last weekend), but literally all beef, virtually all chicken, and almost all bread was gone. About 80% of canned soups were gone. It's fucking ridiculous now. So I can see shit getting real ugly real quick about basic food availability. And like Jax said, the frail and compromised are going to die from it anyway...it's simply trying to ensure that medical facilities aren't overrun by those who get even fairly sick from it.

While the hardship associated with a two to three week "social distancing" effort is going to be difficult on a lot of people, we have literal Cassandras to look at in Wuhan, South Korea, and Italy.

Wuhan went on lockdown Jan 23, followed by the entire Hubei Province later that night, and that involved authoritarian control that has only started easing this weekend -- so, nearly two months.

South Korea had mostly isolated and contained their initial outbreak until "Patient 31" ignored instructions and went to church. Cases exploded in two different clusters and are only now being reined in under an extensive test & trace program.

Asking people to self-distance is going to fail as badly as it has in Europe.

Nah, no excuse with half the country not going to work. Get online and pay Uncle Sam now! /s

And I should definitely continue to have a stream of 50 people per day in and out of my office. That’s not problematic at all.

Have a friend who works at a local gun shop on the weekends. He said they sold a ton of stuff this past weekend and some distributors are running out of certain guns.

I think people can all see where this is headed. You can't ask people to voluntarily go broke. You are going to have to make them.

Imposing martial law in America is a whole 'nother thing than anywhere else in the world.
