Entertaining the idea of keeping the 5 year old out of K for a year? Ours turned 5 a few days ago, supposed to start on 8/25. They haven't announced what school will look like, but if it's like the other districts near by, it'll be a mixture of home/in person with a mask.
I don't have kids, but my closest friend says that "redshirting" his son (mid-June birthday) was the best decision he ever made. We were just band nerds and pretty low on the social totem pole, as, I believe, was my friend's wife, but the kid (just finished his freshman year of college) ended up having a decent multi-sport high school athletic career, being at the top of his school's social ladder and mostly being a great well-adjusted kid with a lot of social skills that will serve him well throughout his life.

5 year old Woof goes to a Montessori school with 9 other classmates. He'd be one of three kids in K grade. 5 days per week, 9AM - 1:00pm
We think we'll have him go through the program and see where he lands at the end. He's missed 3.5 months of schooling and interaction so he's naturally regressed. If need be, we'll have him repeat K grade when he enrolls in the public school in our district.

Yeah, had friends with a June birthday kid that did K in both a (I think, man, I don't remember for sure) Goddard school and then public.

As a summer birthday I wish that my parents had held me out for a year... and that was before stupid Covid. Don't know if you have a boy or a girl, but for boys... and especially if there's a legit interest in / likelihood of sports... take the red-shirt year.

Edit: Looks like others down the thread are of the same opinion.

Our kids are Montessori. One through 6th grade and the other through 8th. Beautiful thing about Montessori is that if you decide to take a redshirt... the district doesn't need to be involved. Hope your school is a good one. There's a lot of Montessori 'banners' that are hung that are only mildly Montessori. Ours was an AMI accreditation so it was pretty much by the rule. Overall it was a great experience for our younger one who is a bit more self-driven than it was for our older one. The older needed to be mainstreamed for his own good. LOL.

Mine is older but we’ve already enrolled him with full time online tutors to replace school.

can’t count on it and their remote options were completely insufficient.

many, many things will change from this and never go back. He knows now he can get better teaching (1 on 1) and get his whole week done in about 5 hours.

he isn’t interested in the 40 hour version anymore until it’s basketball or baseball season.

Another educator(football coach, soon to be AD) in favor of waiting a year. There's an excellent chance that even if schools try to start out in the building that they will return to remote as soon as a positive Covid test comes in. Remote learning will be significantly better now that we can plan, as opposed to the crisis that we faced in the spring.

There's also a million really cool learning activities you could do in the interim, but I'll stick to making pot references and mentioning small townships in southeastern Ahia with Thump.
