I just selected some countries, you can add others and look at deaths as well on a population-adjusted basis. It also is possible to look at testing on a population-adjusted basis. The US has tested more than other countries, but it is really not substantially more than several other countries.
South Africa is intentionally growing now, with a peak scheduled for the second week of August. The growth is within the range of the models, but a bit high. There is talk of renewed restrictions in Johannesburg, but we will see.
So, the US and South Africa appear to be the problem. My bad.
EDIT. Here's a barchart for testing per 1,000 people. Apparently, Iceland kicked everyone's arse on this one.
