I hate dogs, but I guess you're right, I should hate their owners. Been bitten by numerous dogs, and their owners always have the same reaction, "Duuuuuhhhhh, he's never done that before!"

Dogs are incredibly perceptive creatures when it comes to judging humans. Out of curiosity, has a Bernese Mountain Dog or Newfoundland ever bitten you? Because when those breeds bite, it says infinitely more about the recipient of the bite than it does the dog.

Bernies have to be the most gentle and patient dogs I've ever encountered.
A former neighbor had one and when we would visit them, my kids would always climb all over it.

Never even so much as a muffled bark, they are wonderful animals.

Tons of hair and shedding though...

I had one for ten years. Amazing, gentle dogs. Mine would bark if there was someone at the door, but it was purely in anticipation of saying hello. My understanding is Newfies are the same but with much more slobber.

Our kids were in a Montessori school for years. One through 6th grade the other through 8th grade. They had a Bernie in the secondary class (1st - 6th grade) for years. She passed away a few years ago and has been missed by everyone. She was a wonderful animal. I should also mention that the classroom had at least one rabbit, multiple birds and a few lizards - a bearded dragon being one of them - and the Bernie never once had so much as an aggressive move toward any of them.

Some people just set dogs off for some reason. I don't know if it's unusual body chemistry, body language, anxiety, or what. My wife, who is 5'0 and about 100 pounds and utterly nonthreatening has been bitten or nearly bitten several times just walking or standing on the sidewalk without doing anything obvious to get that kind of reaction. And since many Denver dogs owners are incapable of keeping their dogs leashed or giving a shit if their dogs bite people, it's something that causes me some real concern. I've only been bitten randomly once, by a yappy little shit of a spaniel that jumped off of a boat to get at me while I was running along a marina in Mexico. The owner of that dog was the real life version of this guy:

I'm generally very much pro-dog, but, like people, they have individual personalities and there are ones that are assholes exclusive of what their owners are like (although many more bad ones are made that way by shitty owners).

I have been attacked a couple of times by dogs running loose. With rabies implications a dog attack is doubly scary. I am very cautious of all dogs now. Dogs like to come up from behind and nip you.
