I laughed, but these people are at least trying to do something and look like they don't have the resources/access to get actual masks. So while I might laugh at them (especially the Unknown Comic guy), I'll resort to actual disgust and scorn for those who won't even try like the numerous tough old Chicago guys walking around the grocery store just now like nothing's changed.

So they want us to wear masks, of which there are none to be had. They don't need to be the N95 level stuff so wouldn't pretty much any kind of scarfwork?

Time to break out the shemagh?

Got mine yesterday at my parking lot gout diagnosis and exam. It won't do much to protect me, but at least if I'm infected, I'll know that I'm not passing it around when I need to leave the house.

Thicker material is better. If light is passing through it, it needs to be thicker. Something knit is basically useless.

It sounds like me wife is making some today. I requested that she use the most badass fabric she can find. God only knows what kind of flowery bullshit she is going to give me.

You asked for the rainbow.

Don't try to bullshit us.

Saw a post on the web... gal grabbed a large knee wrap her fam doesn't use any more... so she cut it into pieces that can be used like a scarf and tied in the back.. super simple... no gaps... may try it.. only got a hundred wraps hangin around.. not like I ever got hurt in my decades...

Serious question... why can't people who have recovered (and presumably have antibodies) donate blood to those who are infected as a way to help them recover?

EDIT: I've been asking my epidimeologist wife this question for a few weeks, and I can't get a straight answer. So, naturally, I now turn to BP... lol.

Researchers at Vanderbilt have been working on this approach for some time. They are hopeful that a plasma based treatment will become available there within a week or two. Because it will be plasma based, blood type won’t matter.

found this article that cites a 2013 study on mask efficacy

According to a 2013 study in the journal Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, fabric masks that fit snugly on the face provided three times less protection than surgical masks. “We found they are not as good as surgical masks,” Anna Davies, the lead study author, told BuzzFeed News.

Davies and her colleagues found a surgical mask had about a 90% filtration efficiency for very small particles (around 2 microns). The next best materials found at home at blocking particles were vacuum cleaner bags (about 86% filtration efficiency) and tea towels (about 72% filtration efficiency), but they would be so difficult to breathe out of that they wouldn’t be suitable for a mask. Meanwhile, a cotton mix material had about 70% filtration efficiency compared to roughly 57% for a pillowcase, about 62% for linen, about 54% for silk, nearly 51% for a 100% cotton T-shirt, and nearly 49% for a scarf.

Very mixed bag on this (everyone wear a mask) being a real benefit.

This is droplet born, not airborne from everything out there. None of these masks, outside the N95, would do a damn thing if it was airborne.

So really you are back to the 6ft thing because if you are sporting any type of lower grade mask and get coughed on, it's likely getting through.

A T-shirt doesn't have any kind of moisture barrier to keep the droplet's out so, again, what's the point?

I saw chart the other day for general respiratory viruses. Number two behind n95 masks was a vacuum bag. Number three was a towel.
