Corey Dennis (QB Coach & Pass Game Coordinator Tulsa)

Starting to see other fanbases circulate his name as someone they’d like to hire away….Miami fans specifically….seen several of their fans asking for Dennis to be brought in with a new OC to replace Gattis. Just Twitter chat but interesting….

Doubtful. They seem to being ride or die with Gattis. If they were hiring someone from the college ranks to replace him he'd be fired already

Ohio State's Corey Dennis remains an unsung hero in the Buckeyes' QB success

When it comes to recruiting quarterbacks, there is no program better than Ohio State. The Buckeyes have established themselves as a quarterback factory, taking high school prospects and turning them into Heisman Trophy finalists and first-round NFL Draft picks.

Much of the credit for the Scarlet and Gray's quarterback success, specifically on the recruiting trail, has gone to head coach Ryan Day. Day, who originally was Ohio State's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Urban Meyer for two seasons before taking over the program in 2019, has helped take the Buckeyes from a team that had solid college-level quarterback play to one where players know if they do what's asked of them, they will have more than a shot at the NFL.

However, Day is not solely responsible for the Scarlet and Gray's quarterbacks. While he did get the ball rolling in terms of successful pro-ready prospects, starting with Dwayne Haskins in 2018, Corey Dennis is someone who does not often get the recognition he deserves.

After joining the Ohio State staff as an offensive intern in 2015, the former Georgia Tech wide receiver and defensive back moved up to a graduate assistant the next year and became a senior quality control analyst on offense in 2018. Prior to the 2020 season, Dennis was promoted to quarterbacks coach, the position he still occupies for the Buckeyes.

During his time with the Scarlet and Gray, Dennis has worked with multiple positions, but after two seasons as a GA focusing on quarterbacks under Day, the head coach was comfortable moving Dennis into a full-time role.

In that time, Dennis has worked to help develop Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud into two of the best players in the sport, with both players discussing how Dennis helped them get better, but also helped continue to build the Ohio State legacy by landing the Buckeyes' top quarterback after top quarterback on the recruiting trail.

“I don't know if I knew that I was going to be a good or a bad recruiter,” Dennis said in late May. “But I did know that I was going to work hard at it. That recruiting is the lifeblood of college football. And if you don't work at it, then somebody else is working.”

Dennis has worked hard to maintain the Scarlet and Gray standard. He was the primary recruiter on Quinn Ewers in 2021, Devin Brown in 2022, and Lincoln Kienholz in this year's class, all top-15 players at quarterback in their respective classes. He's also been key in landing Ohio State commitments from 2024 five-star signal caller Air Noland and 2025 four-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair.

Dennis has been able to sell the recent Buckeye legacy, that saw Haskins, Fields, and Stroud all go in the top 15 picks in the NFL Draft after Heisman finalist careers with the Scarlet and Gray. This past spring, Stroud became the highest quarterback drafted out of Ohio State, going No. 2 overall to the Houston Texans.

“It definitely helps,” Dennis said of having those players as proof of what playing quarterback for the Buckeyes can lead to. “But Ohio State's a special place, right? Like it's always been a special place. And it's always going to continue to be a special place. And then really just the pieces that we surround you with as a quarterback. And then it's been pretty good to have those guys. I mean, Justin, he's gonna kill it this year. And I can't wait to see what C.J.'s going to do. And he's already lightened it up, I know for sure. And so it's exciting for those guys, definitely.”

Landis from THE Podcast questioned Dennis's ability to develop QB's, and kind of said that Day may need to think about a upgrade. Basically saying that OSU coaching may be some of the blame for McCord's inconsistencies with reads and footwork. I think this is a fair question, that Day may share some of the fault, and maybe if Dennis isn't qualified to coach QB's (because arguably he isn't), maybe OSU should look for somebody else.

Yeah, he did a terrible job of developing Stroud, Fields and Haskins.

On the Monday live show of The Podcast, Birm said he believes McCord was not as prepared as he should have been after three years in the system at the start of the season.

He put forward his theory that Ryan Day works with the starting QBs, and he doesn't work with the backups, so hiring Urban's son-in-law as QB coach appears to not have gotten McCord as ready as he should have been to start this season when Day took over as his main coach, and that a coach with a little more independent QB coaching experience could have done a significantly better job at that before Day took over.
