Hiriko EV

hirikoev.jpg

An interesting new EV concept - dubbed "Hiriko" - has surfaced online. Designed by MIT in cooperation with the Spanish government, the EV boasts some fairly unusual specs.

For example, rather than one large electric motor that sends power to the wheels, each of the Hiriko?s wheels is equipped with its own motor.

This means you can push interior space to the max because there is no motor in the front or rear of the car to deal with.

The oddest feature? The Hiriko literally folds to take up less space and make parking easier. Seriously. Once parked, the driver can retract the rear section of the vehicle to make it shorter.

According to the makers of the car, the Hiriko takes up about 2/3 the space of a Smart ForTwo when it is folded

Just Say No to the Driverless Car
What we are hearing is all the good news about the basic driving progress these cars are making. What we don’t hear is what these cars cannot do. Let me give you my worry list about this:
  1. Can driverless cars operate as safely at night as they do during the day?
  2. Can driverless cars handle rain, fog, and snow?
  3. Once a driverless car gets you to your destination, can it find a parking place in a parking garage or on the street? Can it navigate your garage?
  4. What if you want to go for a casual Sunday drive with no particular destination? Does the car have a “browser” that lets it just wander in a highlighted area, or what? Or will that even be allowed?
  5. Will drivers get frustrated in navigating around slower, more-cautious driverless cars?
  6. Can a driverless car ever make a left-hand turn across traffic, make a right turn on red, or merge into heavy traffic? In many cases, some risk is necessary to make any progress.
  7. Can a driverless car find a toll lane, navigate road construction, or find a detour?
  8. Can a driverless car operate in New York City traffic?
  9. Will the driverless car really improve a person’s productivity if relieved of driving duties, as proponents claim?
  10. Will there be an increase in the incidence of motion sickness in non-drivers, as some expect?
  11. Whose insurance company pays in case of an accident?
  12. Will driverless cars really reduce deaths and injuries? Supporters say yes, but this has not been proven.
  13. Will driverless technology come to 18-wheelers? Scary thought.
  14. Will driverless cars really be affordable, or just too expensive like electrics?
  15. Why not just apply all the good technology to regular cars or make a driverless mode an option?
  16. Does Google have answers to all of these questions?
1. The first 15 questions are good questions. I don't follow this technology, and don't really have much opinion on this. I think it would be cool technology, but I'd be wary of getting in a car that can supposedly go wherever for who knows what reason.
2. But the 16th question is why I posted this. Can a question be whether someone has answers to all these questions? That's like me calling up a supplier and asking what the lead time for an item is, and then asking if he has an answer for my first question.
