Cook, Conley, and Oden

All should be much better and they would have been had they stayed at Ohio State for at least one more season, where they would have learned and matured both physically and mentally.

Ahhh the glorious art of rear view mirror reflection. Well shit if these guys have been thaatttt bad..in effect embarrassments (:roll2:)..then surely just one more year of college wouldn't have helped that much. LOL I don't know, It's just funny how Simms goes out of his way to rip them and then throws out one measley year. I mean I could see if this was part of a greater piece about the need for a 2 or 3 year minimum for college players, but this was like a driveby hit.

Sorry Simsm, they are maturing mentally and physically right now in the NBA..the place they wanted to be all along. One more year of crossing over and blocking college scrubs wouldn't have helped that much as far as making an instant all star type impact. Oh yeah..

Daequan Cook is having a relatively good season.
Mike Conley is improving as well as Greg Oden.
Shit even Kosta hasn't drowned in Utah like many predicted.

Movie next for Oden-Conley book?
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: March 31, 2009

Dave Krider, who authored the book "Uncaged" on the rise of the Greg Oden and Mike Conley-led Lawrence North High School basketball teams earlier this decade, said the book is in the process of being turned into a movie.

Krider, a senior writer for Maxpreps.com, said the screenplay should be completed "by the end of April."

"I feel a lot more confident that this can happen," Krider said. "I really believe it can be one of the best sports movies ever."

Lawrence North won three straight state championships from 2004-06 with Oden and Conley. After a year together at Ohio State, they are now in the NBA.

"Before those kids even played a varsity game, I felt like I was put on a path to write about them," Krider said.

Memphis Grizzlies' Mike Conley, right, chats with Portland Trail Blazers' Greg Oden before an NBA basketball game in Portland, Ore., Wednesday Feb. 18, 2009.

As Greg Oden's up-and-down rookie season winds down, he can take comfort in knowing he'll likely improve next season.
For encouragement, all Oden needs to do is watch longtime friend and college teammate, Mike Conley.

Conley endured a rough rookie season, but has increased his productivity during his second season in the league and helped the Memphis Grizzlies close the regular season with a flourish.

"I definitely want to see that jump," Oden said. "Just seeing him and what he's doing this year is encouragement for me."

Conley has increased his scoring and assist average this season. He said the extra year of experience has worked wonders for his game.

"The first year is all about learning the game all over again against the best players in the world," Conley said. "This year, I've been able to come out with a different level of confidence. I've been able to play knowing what it's like from last year to this year."

Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. soon might be starring in a movie -- about themselves.

The former teammates at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis and at Ohio State are the subjects of a Hollywood screenplay written by MaxPreps.com senior writer Dave Krider, who is apparently working with Disney Channel before trying to sell to movie studios.

Krider said his group is in the final stages of landing actor Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ) to play the role of coach Jack Keefer, who will be the central figure in the story.

Oden and Conley are being sought to play themselves, at least in cameo roles.

Buckeye Stars basketball camp about giving back
By BRIAN McLEAN
Published: Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Daequan Cook, Greg Oden and Michael Conley are three of the most beloved basketball players in recent Ohio State University history. In some circles, the trio is also among its most misunderstood.

As freshmen in 2006-07, that trio was the driving force behind the Buckeyes winning the Big Ten championship and advancing to the NCAA tournament finals.

A few months later, all three were gone, signing big contracts to play in the NBA -- where all three were first round draft picks.

While none of the group makes any apologies for taking advantage of their opportunities, it would be a mistake to view them as three who simply took the money and ran.

For the second-straight year, Cook, Oden and Conley led the Buckeye Stars Basketball camp at Worthington Kilbourne. This year's camp was Wednesday through Friday, July 29-31.

Children from ages 7-18 learned the fundamentals of the game while having fun with the former OSU players.

"We just wanted to give something back to Columbus," Cook said. "While I was here, I received nothing but support from everyone. We want to show how much Columbus meant to us."

Cook is playing for the Miami Heat. Oden is a Portland Trailblazer and Conley is with the Memphis Grizzlies.

"Playing in the NBA is a new opportunity that I'm really enjoying," Cook said. "Taking that step has been a lot of work, but the people there are great and I'm glad to be a part of the organization."

Oden was the featured player July 29, Conley July 30, and Cook July 31. A number of local high school coaches helped teach the large group of youngsters.

"I've always loved working with kids," Cook said. "Basketball can be a lot of work, but it should always be a lot of fun."

Time Is Now For Oden, Conley, Cook

July 31, 2010
When they left Ohio State in 2007, Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook did mighty well for themselves.

Just a couple months removed from the Buckeyes? appearance in the 2007 title game against Florida in Atlanta, the three freshmen were selected in the first round of the NBA draft. The 7-foot Oden, in fact, was the top overall pick while Conley, a slick 6-1 point guard, went No. 4. The 6-5 Cook had to wait a little longer but still went 21st.

All three have experienced their share of success in the three years since, but there has been disappointment as well. Oden has dealt with several injuries and as a result still hasn?t manned the middle the way the Portland Trail Blazers had hoped. Conley has worked his way into a starting role with the Memphis Grizzlies but was the subject of trade rumors last year and already has played for three head coaches.

NBA careers of Greg Oden, ex-No. 1 overall pick, and Mike Conley take interesting twists
Mitch Lawrence
Wednesday, November 3rd 2010

The night of the 2007 NBA draft, if you had predicted that Mike Conley Jr., and not Greg Oden, would be the Ohio State player taken in the top four who would end up getting a contract extension three years later you would have been asked to submit to a drug test.

After only one season at Ohio State, Oden looked like the next great NBA center, a lock to make it as a dominant rebounder, shot-blocker and defender. Conley Jr., who also entered the NBA after one season in Columbus, was projected to have trouble making the transition, what with questions about his size, shooting, ability to run a team and finish around the basket.

But look how it's worked out: Oden, the former No. 1 pick overall, has had his career wiped out by injuries and did not get extended by the Blazers before this week's deadline. Meanwhile Conley Jr., taken with the No. 4 pick by the Grizzlies, has been virtually unguardable this season and received a $40-million extension.

"An amazing twist, for both guys," said one NBA scout. "When you think about what they were projected to do and what's happened since, you never would have expected this."
