Cook, Conley, and Oden

Oden, Conley shadows darkened Pearl long ago
Monday, March 19, 2007

If Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl runs into Ohio State center Greg Oden before their South Regional game Thursday in San Antonio, it will be a reacquaintance, though Oden might not know it.
"Greg doesn?t know me, but I?ve seen Greg since he was in seventh grade," Pearl said. "My son (Steven, a freshman on the Tennessee team) is the same age, and we played them when it was the Lakeview Optimist Club in Evansville, Ind., all the way to when we went to Milwaukee and he played on some Milwaukee AAU teams."

Faith of Buckeyes recruits pays off

By RUSTY MILLER, AP Sports Writer 1 hour, 39 minutes ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio - It's easy to see Greg Oden swatting shots or Mike Conley Jr. slicing through the lane to make a no-look pass and forget just how far Ohio State has come this season. It started with a leap of faith for a group of stellar recruits who could have picked any school and chose a program staring at NCAA probation.
A year later, the Buckeyes have the Final Four and a matchup with Georgetown on Saturday in their sights.
"They took an incredible risk by coming to Ohio State," coach Thad Matta said of the first-year players who are the backbone to this year's 34-3 team. "They chose this program at a time when they didn't know our fate ? if they could even go to postseason play.

One more time
Championship game could spell end for Conley, Oden
Monday, April 2, 2007 3:36 AM
By Todd Jones

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ATLANTA -- They're not surprised to be in the NCAA championship game because all they've known together is winning.

Like hunters with mounted moose heads in a den, they have compiled victories, trophies and championships since first meeting at age 12.
So, in a general sense, playing the Florida Gators tonight is just another big game, like so many past moments shared by the diversely sized basketball duo of Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr.
Yet tonight is adorned with an undercurrent of finality for the two Ohio State freshmen.
"It's kind of weird to think about," Conley said. "I'm trying to make a good lasting impression when I play that last game with him, if that's the case."

If Mike Davis really thinks he would have had a chance at signing them he is delusional. I don't think they really cared for him too much. If IU had made the move a year earlier, I think it would have been a tougher choice for them to leave Indiana.

If you need any more motivation to cheer for these two tonight, there's your article. My favorite part:

OSU coach Thad Matta saw the strength of their friendship while recruiting during an AAU game two years ago.

"Bill Walker walked by on a free throw lineup and elbowed Conley," Matta recalled. "Greg was on the bench, saw it, checked himself into the game and then threw Walker into the wall behind the basket. He said, 'Don't you do that to my teammate.' He got an intentional foul, flagrant foul, a technical, the whole thing."

Oden, Conley Undecided About Jump to NBA

By RUSTY MILLER
AP Sports Writer
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Greg Oden still doesn't know if he's going to the NBA or staying at Ohio State.
As for Buckeyes point guard Mike Conley Jr., "I already told Mike that I was going to break his legs if he leaves," teammate Jamar Butler said with a laugh.

Buckeyes unsure on NBA

Thursday, April 12, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Though no NBA decisions have been made at Ohio State, the future of freshman point guard Mike Conley Jr. is back up in the air after he said in the aftermath of Ohio State's loss to Florida 10 days ago that he was 100 percent sure he'd be back for his sophomore season.
After a celebration of the Buckeyes' basketball team in front of 4,000 fans at Value City Arena on Wednesday night, OSU coach Thad Matta said, "I don't think Michael understood completely what was on the other side of the fence when he said that."
Conley and fellow freshmen Greg Oden and Daequan Cook are hearing from all parties now.

Fans to freshmen: Stay in school

Sources say Oden, Conley and Dunbar's Cook will declare for the NBA draft.

By Mark Gokavi

Thursday, April 12, 2007
COLUMBUS ? The crowd chanted "One more year" Wednesday night for Greg Oden and fellow Ohio State basketball freshmen Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook.
It's more likely those Buckeyes were "one and done" in college.
Sources say all three likely will make themselves eligible for the NBA draft. Albert Powell's opinion is a "90 to 95 percent" chance the trio will ultimately decide to enter the draft.

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State Buckeyes said thanks to an estimated 4,000 fans at Value City Arena on Wednesday night. Those looking for insight into what the 7-foot Oden or his close friend and high school teammate, Conley, are going to do must have gone home disappointed.
Oden and Conley, the freshmen who led the Buckeyes to the national championship game, only spoke during a brief interview session with a couple of former Ohio State players, Bill Hosket and Ron Stokes.
At one point, Hosket said he was going to ask the one question that everyone wanted an answer to - then asked Oden and Conley what they had for lunch.
