Tecmo Bowl

Newbie
Helluva game. Rough ending to the year for my Clones, but that is the NCAA tourney in a nutshell. Seems the region is wide open if you can get past Arizona.

Dagger by Craft. That kid is great. I think had Babb not hurt his ankle this game was destined to go down to the wire anyways. Sucks he had to sit out the 2nd half of his last game. He's meant so much to the program the last 2 years.

Good job by your defense. I thought ISU did alright on offense, but they've certainly had better days. Not as fluid and on fire like they were in a couple games with kansas, where they torched the jayhawk's defense. It was a great battle, and we'll be back. I don't know the numbers but I felt ISU shot the 3 pretty damn well today. Its what they do.

Interesting exchange in the game.....
Ejim missed the front end of a couple 1 and 1's which pained me to no end, then Craft returned the favor. Missed opportunities at the line put both teams in a bind late. How often does that happen in a tourney game?

Enjoy the tourney while it lasts...its a damn fickle thing.
Probably a fitting end to ISU's season....Kansas snuck into OT twice with ISU in the last few seconds. Texas and Oklahoma State had to hit shots at the buzzer against the Clones as well. Thems the brakes. The best part of the win for you guys is that you can savor it for a week in this round.

PS...what did you guys think of Tom Herman as your OC in football??? I liked the guy, but he seemed to outsmart himself a little too often when he was ISU. Sometimes he would miss the real obvious stuff as well.....being a mensa member and all, sometimes he made things too complicated.

Great couple of first posts. You should change your name to "Super Tecmo Bowl".

I loved the mayor when he played for ISU. It seems he's definitely got your program headed in the right direction.

Herman is obviously bright, but he does, on occasion, get a bit too cute with the play calls. Definitely outsmarts himself at times. That being said, our basis for comparison was this guy:
OccupyWalrusBall.jpg

so you won't find too many complaints....yet. Tom's obviously a smart and energetic guy - we are all hoping he sticks around for awhile.

Hoiberg has righted the ship, even though Hawkeye fans will tell you transfers are surely not the way to go to help get a program off the mat.

Tecmo Super is cool, and I've entered tourneys for that game, but the original is the game my friends and I throw down in. It's a long story, but the original is legit too.

Tom has the luxury of having a legit QB at OSU, and a few more weapons around the field to work with than he did at ISU. If he has some struggles at times with his calls, OSU has the players to overcome it more easily. My buddy who used to cover OSU, was impressed by how Meyer really upped the ante on the level of competition within the team. There's a new sheriff in town.

Great game by your Cyclones. I thought they were dead meat when they were down by 13 but they came back strong. Your guys can really shoot the three ball but also we did not defend it very well sometimes.

I don't think the absence of Babb hurt you that much because I think we were better offensively when you guys were playing man-to-man defense. Ohio State struggles against a good zone defense due to the lack of outside shooters.

You might want to go to our Buckeye Football forum to get more comments regarding Herman.

Good luck holding onto Hoiberg as your coach. I understand the pull of coaching your home school (ISU is not just alma mater, but Ames is where he grew up), but big programs will be calling him this offseason. I hope he stays in Ames, but other programs will be throwing some large coin his way.

I really didn't want to play you guys because I had seen enough - two OT games versus Kansas - to know it could be a game like we had today. Frankly, after ISU caught us late I thought we were in BIG trouble.

Bucks got a steal and then the shot by Craft all in the final minute. For 39 minutes, it was dead even. Hoiberg has your program going strong. I expect to see the Cyclones in the dance regularly for the foreseeable future.

Who knows, ISU could end up in the B1G someday with the superconferences forming. Time will tell.

Heck of a game by your guys, they should hold their heads high with that tremendous effort. Hate to see either team go home, they could have beaten the majority of the teams still playing with that effort.

As for Herman, his creativity and aggressiveness is such a welcome relief. OSU just finished up a decade of offenses ranging from consistent to frustrating with one exception, 06, and that aggression was to hide and protect a very soft defense.

OSU had the best wrs in the country, a string of elite backs, multiple elite QBs and yet their predictable offense gave the opposition a major edge and often asked their superior back fields to execute in a phone booth

Before Co OC Hazell was given some say in the offense, there was no bootleg off of power run looks. Outside of Michigan, the plays weren't just predictable based on situation, but the formations would telegraph the plays.

Then when Tressel leadership was gone and the suffocating defense was merely strong, we witnessed a dreadful offense with no rhyme, reason or ability to execute against lower tier big teams. Bollman was the whipping boy for most of the decade, although some of that was borne out of Tressel hyper conservative approach to offense.

Forget the wild, wide open formations from Herman, it is a huge development to actually throw over the middle to the tight end. Tressel felt it was too risky. As a result supremely gifted tight ends like Fred Davis and Kyle Rudolph wanted no part of staying home at OSU and a number of other gifted tight ends made their marks with a couple big plays over an entire career.

Tressel system won and won big, but it was the antithesis of Herman and Meyer's quest to stress and overwhelm the defense.

He is their Pat Fitzgerald.

Not sure I agree with the second part of that. OSU played pretty good perimeter defense overall, in my opinion. ISU just has several guys who are pretty reliably able to hit 19-23 foot jump shots with a hand in their face. One of the better teams I've seen at being able to hit contested 3-pointers, from several players/positions.

I understand that ISU played a heckuva game, but any team can beat them with a 7 point lead and .2 left on the clock.:wink2:

In all seriousness I'm glad it didn't go into overtime. ISU could have easily went on a run we might not have been able to overcome.
