Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

For those interested, here is the law at issue:

9.67 Restrictions on owner of professional sports team that uses a tax-supported facility.

No owner of a professional sports team that uses a tax-supported facility for most of its home games and receives financial assistance from the state or a political subdivision thereof shall cease playing most of its home games at the facility and begin playing most of its home games elsewhere unless the owner either:

(A) Enters into an agreement with the political subdivision permitting the team to play most of its home games elsewhere;

(B) Gives the political subdivision in which the facility is located not less than six months' advance notice of the owner's intention to cease playing most of its home games at the facility and, during the six months after such notice, gives the political subdivision or any individual or group of individuals who reside in the area the opportunity to purchase the team.

Not sure about the constitutionality of this, particularly the "forced sale" provision detailed in Section B, but I guess we'll see.

I was thinking the same thing about the constitutionality of this when I heard about it. I do not see how you can restrict a owner from moving a team no matter what.

Crew SC in talks with local investors to keep team in Columbus

Big news for Crew fans as Columbus Crew soccer owner Anthony Precourt is in talks with city leaders and local investors to try to keep the team here.

Crew fans have been anxiously waiting to see what will happen with this team. Are they headed to Austin? Will they stay in Columbus? Friday’s news brings a lot of hope.

Alex Fischer, CEO of Columbus Partnership, says after meeting with Precourt, city leaders and Major League Soccer in New York, he was approached by local investors.

“Post our New York meetings, we were approached by local investors and were happy to introduce them to Mr. Precourt. We are encouraged that those introductions have been made and preliminary conversations have been constructive,” said Fischer.

This news comes days after city leaders in Austin wavering on building a stadium for the team....:slappy:

In the meantime, Crew fans are excited about the news.

“Some of the most passionate people I know are crew fans and are about Columbus. We love our city and we love our team,” said Crew fan Jason Green.

Nice 2-0 win @ Toronto FC to start the season.

Didn't watch and I'm finding it very difficult to want to. I'm in a tough place of wanting to support this team to the death, but I absolutely despise the MLS and what it's done to American soccer. Fuck this league, plain and simple. Have plenty more to say but it's a disgrace to the fans and I honestly wish failure for the league at this point (I know, not happening), if the Crew are moved- which seems to be unstoppable at this point.

Anyway, go Crew, I guess.

Without going into some kind of Nostradamus level prediction of what will finally happen with the Crew (and murky poems are about as close as I can get)-- I will say, it's been rather interesting to see Austin react to the potential move at about a 1.2 on the give-a-fuck scale. (Out of 10 fucks to give). Somehow at the same time the move seems both unstoppable and undoable. Precourt has reached a breathtaking level of ineptitude so far.

City Asks For More Time To Possibly Purchase Columbus Crew

The Columbus City Attorney's office has made another move in its attempt to keep Columbus Crew in the city.

City Attorney Zach Klein asked the Franklin County Common Pleas Court on Monday to pause a six-month period when local investors have a chance to buy the Major League Soccer franchise.

“This tactic enables us to pause the six-month time period as outlined in the law in order to protect investments by the people of Ohio,” Klein wrote in a statement. “This will allow the City of Columbus to ensure that local investors in fact have the opportunity to purchase the team.

Both the city and the state, led by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, have sued the owner of Columbus Crew, Precourt Sports Ventures, arguing the company failed to give the city proper notice and the chance to buy the team when they announced the team's possible move to Austin, Texas.
