Blue Jackets Acquire Left Wing Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman from Atlanta Thrashers for Future Considerations - Columbus Blue Jackets - News

COLUMBUS, OHIO ? The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired left wing Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for future considerations, club General Manager Scott Howson announced October 8. He was then assigned to the Syracuse Crunch, the club's American Hockey League affiliate.
LaVallee-Smotherman (pronounced Luh-VAL-Lee SMUH-thuhr-mahn), 23, was Atlanta?s fifth pick, 116th overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft. He has collected one goal and one assist for two points and is +1 in four career NHL games with the Thrashers and has spent most of the past three seasons playing with the AHL's Chicago Wolves. He has registered 39-34-73 and 167 penalty minutes in 140 career AHL games, including a career-high 20-22-42 and 73 penalty minutes in 76 games in 2007-08.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound native of Corvallis, Oregon played four seasons with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2002-06. He tallied 72-67-139 and 307 penalty minutes in 225 games, including a career-high 40-26-66 and 108 penalty minutes in 64 games during the 2004-05 season.

toss in a few lineup shakeups (or at least on the pregame slots) should make it interesting. then toss in blundens cbj debut and recently acquired stralman also. dorsett in.

fialtov*/brass/jake
chimmer/phalsson/umberger
torres/blunden/dorsett

id expect the nikita raffi to flip around and be very situational. brass move partially tied to big joe and partially to his play.


for the record hordichuk got a (small) fine.
NHL fines Canucks' Hordichuk $2,500 for hit on Boll

career 2.83 gaa and .905 save percentage. (and he catches right, paddles left-like mason. should provide more continuity in play).

long story short, likely best backup columbus has ever had. hes a backup plus or light starter. sort of a career tweener.

Probably one of the better backups in the league, no? I'd give him top 5 status as far as backups go.

as the right handed catch goes not a doubt in my mind. (that is the minority approach as most netminders catch left).

toss in as i mentioned both goalies paddle right (which should do away with some of the miscommunication, silly mistakes, etc in puckhandling). i also think the dave rook move was a good move, last year there was no goaltending for mase after the incident. also with pazzy's injury and the dubie acquisition well there wasnt much for the franchise to lean on, including when mason had mono.
