Former Blue Jackets Pascal Leclaire left the arena moments ago with a garment bag slung over his shoulder a protective boot on his right foot. Here are some comments from three different interviews this morning:
Your thoughts about leaving the Jackets?
“When you come in with the same bunch of guys like Rick (Nash) and Rusty (Klesla), we all grew up together and we were working toward the day we would be in the playoffs,” Leclaire said. “We wanted to get on the winning path, but I’ll never get to live it with these guys. They are going to get in the playoffs and they are playing well and they are adding a good player in (Antoine) Vermette."
Were you surprised by the trade?
"You're always a little surprised, but I had been hearing it was a possibility of the last couple of days, so no not really."
When Steve Mason started playing well, did you think this was something that could happen?
“I feel like I’m a No. 1 guy, too and I’m good when I’m healthy. When Steve came in and started playing well, you knew something might happen. It’s not the first time it’s happened in hockey. Usually, the older guy with the bigger contract goes.”
Your thoughts about Mason?
"He's just a really good goaltender who's going to get better. He's not only technically sound, but really mentally tough."
Where were you when you heard the news?
I was at home eating breakfast. I was watching TSN on my computer when I went into the bath room and then I heard . . . A little while later I had 400 phone calls."
Who is the first person you called?
My parents (who live in suburban Montreal). They are going to have a chance to see a lot more of me, so are my friends. I grew about two hours away from Ottawa and we're now in the same division with Montreal. So my parents will have a lot of free tickets. "
Do you know Antoine Vermette?
Oh, yeah, we've played on teams together back in Quebec. He's a really skilled player and a great guy, You guys are going to love him here."
Are there any regrets?
"No, not really. I always wish I would have been more healthy this season after coming off last season, but you never decide to be hurt."What was your best memories in Columbus?
"My first game (a 3-2 loss against Phoenix, Feb. 20, 2004) . . . and last year getting a shutout in my hometown of Motreal . . . I will keep only good memories here."
Leclaire's final thoughts:
"If you know anyone who wants to buy a condo, (I've got one) available."
