Blue Jackets notebook
Youth still hallmark of Jackets
Team will develop talent until it can afford to pay free agents

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets aren't rebuilding.
That would suggest that they were previously built, only now to be torn apart and put back together. Instead, the Blue Jackets, after six NHL seasons, are still a construction project. If a motto is needed for 2007-08, perhaps "Excuse Our Dust" would work.
It's clear after barely three weeks on the job that general manager Scott Howson and coach Ken Hitchcock are on the same page, firm in their belief that the Blue Jackets -- with so many young, unproven NHL players on their roster -- must now swallow the bitter medicine that comes with young players getting on-the-job experience in the big leagues.
"We're building," Howson said earlier this week. "We have to take those steps it takes to build that championship team. This team will be part of that process."

The Columbus Dispatch : Jackets hoping better schedule bolsters energy

jackets schedule released
The Blue Jackets open their seventh season Oct. 5 in Nationwide Arena against the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.

The Blue Jackets will play games on back-to-back nights only 12 times, the fewest in franchise history. Last season, they played games on consecutive nights 21 times.
...

He's close. Montreal, Edmonton and Colorado each play nine back-to-backs, Calgary 10 and Nashville 11. Toronto and Tampa Bay also play 12 apiece.
The Blue Jackets have never been on the low end of back-to-backs. This year, they were willing to give up prime dates for home ticket sales (Fridays and Saturdays) to space out the games more.
The Jackets will play 10 home games on Wednesdays but only six on Fridays and seven on Saturdays.

Hitchcock also has requested that the Blue Jackets change their travel habits.
Rather than return late at night after a game on the West Coast, the Blue Jackets will spend the night and fly home the next day, taking a day off from practice but maintaining a more regular sleep pattern.
"It means fewer practices and more rest, and that's the balance you have to ride," Hitchcock said. "We had a few times last season where we'd get back from long trips at 4 or 5 or 6 in the morning, and we really struggled for the next few days to get our energy back.

  • The Jackets have 11 home games and three road games in December. Christmas could be a wonderful time of the year … or a disaster.
  • They'll pay it back in January, when they play 10 of 14 games on the road. Between Jan. 2 and March 4, the Blue Jackets play 20 of 29 games on the road.
  • For the sixth time in seven seasons, the Blue Jackets will play host to a game on New Year's Eve, this time against the Edmonton Oilers.
  • The Blue Jackets end the season playing 11 of the last 12 games against Central Division opponents, four of them vs. the Detroit Red Wings.
  • The Blue Jackets will play the five Southeast Division teams at home for the first time since the 2003-04 season, giving local fans a rare chance to see Washington's Alexander Ovechkin (Feb. 5) and Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk (Dec. 26). They'll also play host to Carolina, Florida and Tampa Bay.

I'll never understand the leagues love for having the vast majority of their back to backs as road games. Surely they can have more back to backs at home.

Why play the Stars on Saturday Jan 19, then fly to Denver to play the Avs the next night, then fly back to Dallas to play the Stars again Tuesday?

A game in Calgary should always be followed by Edmonton. Those could be back to back. Why make it Oilers, fly to Canucks, then back to the Flames?

Personally, I think 12 b2b's are too many.

as a team who has been in the top 3 for most b2b games every year its good to see the league took notice to hitchcock/dougs complaining on the issue.

personally i think that each team should play every team at least once, in a perfect world id like to see every team at home, its the best way to market the ovies and sids of the game, no sense keeping those two east all the time. granted the powers taht run the nhl are based out of the east and it wont change anytime soon, the power lies within the amb and the candian extension...

The NHL rumor mill has been churning for the past month about how the Blue Jackets are in the market for a proven goaltender, either through trade or free agency.

It couldn't be further from the truth. Give it an E0, Eklund.
Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson makes it clear that he never engaged in trade talks for a goal-tender during the NHL entry draft in June in Nationwide Arena, when Tomas Vokoun (traded from Nashville to Florida) and Vesa Toskala (from San Jose to Toronto) changed addresses. The Jackets weren't in the running for Manny Fernandez (Minnesota to Boston), either, Howson said.

Wright joins Blue Jackets' front office

Friday, July 27, 2007 3:27 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Tyler Wright is back with the Blue Jackets. But from now on, he'll be wearing a suit instead of a sweater.

The Blue Jackets named Wright their director of player development yesterday. He will work with the club's players throughout the minor leagues, Canadian juniors and U.S. college hockey.
"Hockey is who I am, and this is where I want to be," Wright said. "This is a job I'm really excited about. I haven't been this excited about hockey for a long time. I can't wait to get to (Nationwide Arena for training camp) and start building relationships with these kids. I'm going to give my blood and guts to this position."

By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

David Vyborny signed a two-year contract with the Blue Jackets in April 2006, saying he wanted to head back to the Czech Republic after the 2007-08 season so his children could be raised in his homeland.

Apparently, Vyborny has had a change of heart, one that delights the Blue Jackets.
"I've talked to David and I've talked to his agent, Rich Winter," general manager Scott Howson said. "David has expressed an interest in staying in Columbus for the long term. That was nice to hear."

Saturday, August 4, 2007 3:20 AM

Jim Clark, the Blue Jackets' assistant general manager since two years before they began play in 2000-01, will be let go after this season.

Clark has been asked to move to Syracuse, N.Y., where he'll run the minor-league Crunch for the 2007-08 season.
"When his contract expires next July 1, he will move on," general manager Scott Howson said.
