Jackets take time taking new direction

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson, hired in June, is still relatively new to central Ohio, so the "welcome to Columbus" phone calls keep coming in to his Nationwide Arena office.

"The tenor from the callers is 'best wishes, good luck, welcome to Columbus ? and what's the reasoning behind this move, or this non-move?' " Howson said. "People care, and that's great. I love the passion."
Mostly, Howson has been asked to defend his non-moves this summer.
The theory among the agitated part of the fan base goes something like this: How could the Blue Jackets, who finished 23 points out of the playoffs last season and sit about $12 million below the NHL salary cap, not be a major player on the free-agent market?

NHL.com - Division Notes

It seems like just yesterday when I ran into old pal Al Arbour on the morning of a Washington Capitals-New York Islanders game on Long Island. But I must tell the truth, it happened in late-January of 1985. "Watch our new guy at center. No. 46," Arbour urged. "He scored two goals on his first two shots in the NHL against Detroit the other night. Then he got another goal in his next game against Toronto. There’s something about this fella. I want to see what you think of him."
No. 46? Arbour wanted me to watch No. 46. (High numbers back then were for training camp tryouts, right? Well, the Islanders had gone through a spat of injuries and brought up four players and gave them Nos. 45, 46, 47 and 57 ... the equipment man didn’t have a 48 available I guess).
I watched and watched rookie center Scott Howson. He was tall and lean. Looked like a prototypical playmaking center. He was good with the puck. He was smart. But then how did he really fit the four-time Stanley Cup champion Islanders? What can you say when he’s the fourth act at center behind Bryan Trottier, Brent Sutter and Pat LaFontaine?
Suddenly, Howson struck, increasing his shooting magic to four goals in three games ... top shelf against Capitals goaltender Pat Riggin.

Here's what Doug MacLean is up to now:

Group has deal in place to purchase Lightning

TAMPA, Fla. -- A group led by former Florida Panthers coach Doug MacLean has agreed to buy the Tampa Bay Lightning and says it has no plans to move the franchise that won its only Stanley Cup three years ago.

"Absolute zero thought of that," MacLean said at a news conference following the surprise sale by Palace Sports and Entertainment, a group led by Detroit Pistons owner Bill Davidson.

"Typically, you come into a situation where ownership has been an issue," MacLean said. "We're following a great ownership group that took the Tampa Bay franchise and really put it on the map."

Davidson bought the Lightning in 1999 and helped transform the club from a perennial last-place team struggling to sell tickets into a franchise that won the Stanley Cup in 2004 and has made the playoffs the past four seasons.

The one thing Davidson couldn't do, though, was make the Lightning profitable.

Team officials have said the club has lost more than $70 million under current ownership and that the only season the club made money was during its championship run.

MacLean, fired in April as the Columbus Blue Jackets' president and general manager, declined to discuss the purchase price, saying the sale is still subject to approval by the NHL's board of governors.
The sale caught many off-guard.

Very funny, the next time I run into Tiger Woods I'll ask him if his wife can translate it for me.
the article says lindstrom (a prospect see that thread for his post) is playing on forsbergs (foppa) summer team, he is playing on the same line as forsberg and backstrom (capitals prospect). fred modin is also on that team. the article says lindstrom looks good, he was zetterbergs replacement.

a red jacket huh?

No, I'm not one of those. I was a Wings fan long before the Jackets were thought up. I'm a Detroit fan for everything (grew up west of Toledo, a mile from the border), except I go to Ohio State so I hold a severe hatred for their suburban neighbors in Ann Arbor. I just want the Jackets to do well because I live here and the fans have been so good to the Jackets while seeing so little in results. The Red Wings have long been my favorite team, the only other team that rivals Ohio State for me.

EDIT: Me pulling for the Jackets in non-Wings games will end when they become an actual threat to the Wings. Something I thought that would have happened by now.

Exactly.

I want to see Columbus do well, mainly because it's a chance to watch the NHL in Ohio and not have to drive to that cesspool up north.

im teasing you guys. red jacket is a term that is used for red wings fans who are natives to columbus and will dawn the cbj sweater, obviously different levels of this exist. note in nashville they call them pred wings (a much better name)

Oh, I know. I guess maybe I am. But I grew up in Detroit area so the Wings were the local team, not just a bandwagon choice. I don't own any Blue Jackets merch, save for a puck I bought at one game a few years ago.
