Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

8. Maxim Mayorov, Columbus. A steal with the 94th pick. NHL teams were far too chicken to draft Russian players this year. Columbus has been through the headache before and are certainly capable of bringing this highly-talented winger to the NHL in a couple of years. He should have gone top 20. More talented than most in the draft, Mayorov also boasts a projectable frame (thin, but tall and will fill out) and a ton of speed. He has wrist shot worthy of 40 goals some day.
5. Jakub Voracek, Columbus. It pains fantasy junkies to see the Blue Jackets land two guys in my top 10 in this year’s draft, given how draft picks have performed for Columbus up until now (even Rick Nash has never had more than 57 points in one season). However, Mayorov was a steal and Voracek was the right pick at seven. He is not that far from the NHL, as he touts a solid all-around game. His offense, defense and physicality are all high-end. He would have been the first overall pick, hands-down, if he played the way he is capable of every time he stepped onto the ice. Consistency is his drawback. He could produce in the mid- to late-80s one day.

Gilbert Brule, right, posted just 19 points last season.

The front-office staff, coaches and media had Gilbert Brule penciled in as the No. 2 center when the Blue Jackets assembled for training camp last September. His candidacy for the Calder Trophy was hyped. He wound up scoring one point for every year of his life, 19, and toiling short minutes on the fourth line.

3. Columbus Blue Jackets
Going by all the kind words, the Jackets were marvelous hosts for the draft, but that doesn't mean they let their guests have all the fun. Jakub Voracek, ranked by several scouts as the most NHL-ready player in this class, fell into their laps at No. 7 after the Los Angeles Kings shook up the order by selecting defenseman Thomas Hickey at No. 4. Voracek's downfall may have been the "safe pick" label he drew in the weeks leading up to the draft, but as one scout said, "What's wrong with a sure thing?" He looks like a winger the Jackets can pencil into their top six after his remarkable performance in the Quebec League playoffs (24 points in 12 games).
The Jackets also added good value picks with undersized OHL sniper Stefan Legein (No. 37), project defenseman Will Weber (No. 53) and Maxim Mayorov (No. 94), a first-round talent whose stock plummeted due to the lack of a transfer agreement with the Russian federations.

NHL.com - Legein's grittiness impresses Columbus brass

Legein's grittiness impresses Columbus brass Shane Malloy | NHL.com correspondent Jun 29, 2007, 9:32 AM EDT

Stefan Legein is a fire plug who shares a similar tenacity and a comparable skill set to current NHL players Darcy Tucker and Sean Avery.
Every organization needs a pest; a player that gets under the skin of the opposition and drives them up the wall to the point of taking bad penalties. Toronto's Darcy Tucker and Sean Avery of the Rangers have made themselves very valuable by playing a grating game.
Mississauga Ice Dog forward Stefan Legein, selected in the second round (No. 37) Saturday by the Columbus Blue Jackets, could very well follow in the footsteps of the aforementioned examples in the near future.
He not only resembles Tucker and Avery in style of play; but also in size. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound fire plug is earning a reputation for both his tenacity and skill set. The Oakville, Ont., native agrees with the comparisons in style to both Tucker and Avery and relishes role he plays every night. "I see myself as sort of a pest-type player, but one who can also put the puck in the net -- similar to Sean Avery or Darcy Tucker," Legein said.
Legein is not the only one comparing himself to those two gifted agitators. New Columbus GM Scott Howson sees the same thing and admitted that such comparisons played a part in his decision to take Legein early in the second round.

NHL
Blue Jackets will keep Fedorov, Foote

Saturday, June 30, 2007 3:31 AM
By Aaron Portzline

The Columbus Dispatch

Center Sergei Fedorov and defenseman Adam Foote will play for the Blue Jackets next season, rather than be bought out of the final year of their contracts.

There had been speculation that the club would try to shed Fedorov's $6.08 million and Foote's $4.6 million before NHL free agency begins at noon Sunday.
"They're going to be back, both of them," general manager Scott Howson said. "They're world-class players who have had great careers and, we think, still have a lot to offer our club."

why would you spend money to buy out players if you arent spending to the cap? do you think you can replace foote/feds next year with 1/3 of their salary for an equal player? no...

ps bm80 hopefully they wont be trade bait. hopefully we can tally 90 to 95 pts and make it to the time in the year when you dont pay the players...
