Anaheim's Murray, Jackets will talk

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Bob Murray, vice president of hockey operations for the Anaheim Ducks, will interview for the Blue Jackets' vacant general manager's post.
The Ducks have granted permission for Blue Jackets president Mike Priest to talk with Murray, but it's unclear when the interview will take place. It could be as soon as this weekend, before the Ducks open the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday against the Ottawa Senators, if Ducks GM Brian Burke gives Murray clearance to leave the club for a couple of days.
Burke did not return calls seeking comment yesterday.
Murray was not with the Ducks yesterday. The club said he would be out of town today as well but did not reveal his whereabouts.

NHL notebook: Zherdev adviser suggests a trade might be best route

Nikolai Zherdev
TORONTO -- An adviser to Blue Jackets right winger Nikolai Zherdev said "it maybe would be good for both sides" if Zherdev were traded before the start of the 2007-08 season.
But, Sasha Tyjnych said, Zherdev is spending this summer with the mind-set that he'll remain with the Blue Jackets.
"Columbus is what he's thinking about," Tyjnych said. "He wants to be in great shape coming into training camp. He's working out three times a week right now. On Aug. 15, he's coming to Ottawa to work with a fitness coach and get some ice time. He'll stay there until training camp."
Zherdev's first season under coach Ken Hitchcock did not go well.

Bob Hunter commentary: MacLean's bluster had its value sometimes

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
When prohibitive favorite Bob Murray withdrew from the Blue Jackets' general manager derby the other day, it seemed like precisely the kind of situation when it would have been good to have Doug
MacLean around.
Many fans were in a state of panic. Were the Blue Jackets blowing the search? Was this a sign that nothing had changed?
This is where MacLean was best. The former GM has always been the ultimate spin master. In the past six seasons, whenever storm clouds appeared -- and let's face it, by now it's a wonder we all haven't drowned -- he had a way of making it seem as if the latest dose of horrible news was a blessing in disguise.

Dave King was fired Jan. 7, 2003, after coaching the Blue Jackets from the beginning in 2000.
In 1997, Dave King moved to Japan and helped get the country's fledgling hockey program off the ground in time to play host to the Olympics in Nagano.
In 2000, he became the Blue Jackets' first coach.
Since being fired in 2003, King, 59, has coached in Germany, Sweden and Russia. He spent two years in Siberia -- willingly.
The man loves a challenge. And now, it seems, he's ready for another one.
As the Blue Jackets' search for a general manager drags on, King, according to a well-placed source in Canada, has made it known that he would like to be considered.

After a long and somewhat strange search for a new general manager, the Columbus Blue Jackets are in the final stages of negotiations to name Edmonton Oilers assistant GM Scott Howson to their vacant position.
Barring any breakdowns in the talks, the Blue Jackets could make a formal announcement as early as Thursday and probably no later than Friday.
Howson emerged as a lead candidate after Ducks assistant GM Bob Murray decided to withdraw his name from consideration on June 4. Previously, Murray had been viewed as the club's top choice to replace Doug MacLean, who was fired in April after six straight losing seasons. When Murray decided to stay with the Stanley Cup champions, the Jackets scrambled to find other candidates.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
After nearly two months of searching, it appears the Blue Jackets are set to hire Scott Howson as their new general manager. Howson, the Edmonton Oilers' assistant GM the past six seasons, was in contract talks with the Blue Jackets today, an NHL source said.
An announcement likely will be made by the end of the week, possibly Thursday.
Blue Jackets president Mike Priest was not immediately available for comment, spokesman Todd Sharrock said.

In Hitchcock we trust.
ill tell you right now a year from now youll miss doug. if only for that never again will the average fan be given the 'insider' info that doug provided to everyone via all of his media exposures (radio show, tv, radio, newspaper etc)With Doug MacLean out of there now I sure hope the new GM Howson will bring change to our Columbus Blue Jackets. We are a playoff team and he might add the missing parts to make the playoffs.
