Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Sell the team, John. Fire everyone. Build around the young core.
Everyone in the front office needs to be shown the door. The absurd decision to hire a subhuman like Mike Babcock to head a young, rebuilding team was one of the most baffling decisions I've seen in sports. As expected, it blew up in their faces...much sooner than expected...rendering this season totally wasted before it began.

I’ve defended Jarmo in the past, but I’m not sure why. He’s made trades that any GM with a pulse could make, non desirable NHL city destination or not…. His biggest strength would be his drafting and scouting staff’s ability to find guys like Chinakhov, among others, but the coaching’s lack of developing young guys has been beyond frustrating. I know Torts had his faults, but moving on from him with no plan beyond firing him will go down as, IMO, the biggest blunder in this team’s history. Torts was abrasive, but god damn did he know how to get the best out of his roster. The guy at the top of my coaching wishlist before they shit the bed with Babcock was Jukka Jalonen (current coach of the Finland National Team). He doesn’t have any NHL experience, which is a little dicey, but I feel like he’d develop younger players better than your retread NHL hires.

Adam Fantilli has been pretty damn good, Zach Werenski is one of the better offensive defensemen in the league, Kent Johnson is the biggest question mark, but he’s shown glimpses.

My biggest problem with how this team is playing under Pascal Vincent is too often, when his team is playing with a lead late in the game, he tries to play not to lose. Rather than sticking to their core tactics, you go into shell mode and hope you don’t lose. Different sport, but Caleb Porter is the king of doing this in the MLS. He’s won NCAA National Championships at Akron, two MLS Cups with Portland and Columbus. But when his play not to lose tactic gets figured out, teams swarm and go all out. It’s why he’s been fired from both MLS jobs despite winning Cups. It’s just not a viable strategy in professional sports. Pascal has had success in the QMJHL and the AHL where utilizing tactics like that might actually work. But he needs to realize it ain’t working at the top level, just as it doesn’t work in MLS, and won’t work in any of the other top professional leagues in NA.
