Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Seems like a win for both sides, assuming Anderson gets and stays healthy. Domi is fairly skilled but also one feisty son of a bitch. Adding a 3rd is a bonus, although Domi, an RFA, will likely be more expensive to sign than Anderson would be.

EDIT - a bunch of Habs fans are pissed af about this deal, so that makes me like it even more.

They pretty much stole the 3rd round pick. Doesn’t really make any sense for that to be in the deal unless they just really wanted to get rid of Domi

Huge win in CBJ’s favor.

I trust Jarmo, especially when it comes to Euro players. People were aghast when he picked PLD over Puljujarvi and he was 100% right. They were skeptical of Foudy and he's looking like a guy who's going to end up being pretty damn good. Not to mention some of the lower round picks that he's hit on -- Elvis, Tex, Bjorkstrand.

They are going hard after Taylor Hall is my guess.

I hate to see Murray go.....really wish he could have stayed healthy.

The Blue Jackets just do not have a successful history of signing free agents. If they actually do sign him I hope he doesn't become another over paid guy that really doesn't want to be in Columbus like; Fedorov, Foote, Carter......etc.

I wonder if they still subscribe to this....

Blue Jackets plan to build from within, not through free agency, GM says

#CBJ has cleared $11.8 million in cap space today with the buyout of Wennberg ($4.5M net)

The Panthers have now signed Alexander Wennberg, who was bought out by the Blue Jackets. TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that it is a one-year deal worth $2.25M.
Wennberg, 26, is signing a “show me” deal in an effort to rehabilitate his value on a one-year deal in hopes of cashing in next off-season. Wennberg never lived up to the six-year, $29.4M deal he signed in Columbus following a breakout 59-point season in 2016-17. He has recorded declining point totals in each of the past three seasons and looked more like a 20-30 point player rather than a 60+ point player. With the Blue Jackets looking to make major improvement to their roster, they opted to buyout the remaining three years of Wennberg’s contract rather than continuing to pay him to under-produce.
No one outside of Columbus knows Wennberg’s true potential better than Zito, who appears happy to give the young forward a second chance. Florida could lose free agents Mike Hoffman and Evgenii Dadonov and will need to find offense elsewhere. A change of scenery and an increased role could be all it takes to get Wennberg to display his star power once again.

It's too bad the Blue Jackets couldn't of somehow kept him for $2.25M (i.e. closer to his actual value).

Koivu signs one-year, $1.5 million contract with Blue Jackets
Made offers to Pietrangelo, Hall, wary of offer sheet to Dubois

Mikko Koivu signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

The 37-year-old forward scored 21 points (four goals, 17 assists) in 55 games with the Minnesota Wild last season and did not have a point in four Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"Mikko Koivu has been a very consistent, productive two-way player in the National Hockey League for many years," Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. "He is a great leader, has impeccable character and will be a valuable addition to our young team."

Kekalainen said contract offers to free agent defenseman Alex Pietrangelo and forward Taylor Hall were made but weren't accepted. The Blue Jackets have limited NHL salary cap space and need to protect themselves against an offer sheet to center Pierre-Luc Dubois, who is a restricted free agent. They also want to sign defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to a long-term contract.

The NHL salary cap will stay $81.5 million for next season, which is targeted to begin Jan. 1, 2021.

"Every pitch we make is serious," Kekkalainen said. "I'm not going to get into any details about confidential conversations. We take our pitch very seriously when we do one, but we know the market prices and we know what we have available for cap room and what we need to keep available for cap room to get Pierre-Luc Dubois and Gavrikov comfortably within the structure and the cap so that we're not vulnerable for an offer sheet, or anything like that. It hasn't worked out with [Hall and Pietrangelo], but we added Mikko and we're very happy about that."

The Blue Jackets on Oct. 6 acquired forward Max Domi in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens for Josh Anderson and the next day signed Domi to a two-year contract worth $5.3 million per season.
