Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Whatever. I don't really hold any ill will towards any of them. I won't say I'm rooting for them, but it's certainly not a Jeff F. Carter or Adam MF Foote situation.

Plenty of money to throw around now....just need to find someone willing to take it.

Gustav Nyquist - 4 yrs @ $5.5M AAV.

@Mike80 -- you've probably seen more of this guy than any of us -- any thoughts?

I kinda can't wait until he turns the puck over in the offensive zone and skates back at half speed just to see the reaction from Torts. Either he'll conform to Torts or he won't play a ton. I figure it'll happen once and he'll learn to not do it again.

Better offensively than Wenneberg and a LOT more aggressive. I don't know if he's intended to be a replacement for Wenneberg, he's not on Duchene or Panarin's level. A line with Atkinson-PLD-Nyquist would make some noise offensively though. His signing won't move the needle with people who wanted Panarin or Duchene back but it's not a total disaster. He'll give you about 20 goals and 30-35 assists and can skate with the top-6 given how the lineup currently looks. They can sign one more big time center that would be best - Nyquist isn't a natural center. And remember he's a career +1 raiting and he played on some especially bad Detroit teams the past few years.

The Common Moron and the Fat Idiot on 97.1 were crying all show long yesterday (I was on the road for most of it and 610 is boring in the afternoons)...

Here's the deal - this team was better before it had Panarin. They were an absolute bitch to play against when they concentrated on the physical game and playing defense. Bob won a Vezina off of it and that style is much more like what Torts is used to coaching. We saw it early on last season for a bit too - Panarin and PLD weren't scoring yet so everything was a bit of a defensive grind. They went to a more skilled game which helped guys like Atkinson and Panarin but then we'd see the baffling defensive breakdowns that killed them. Then it flipped again for the Tampa series (the 1-2-2 they ran completely shut down Tampa) and for some reason went away from it against Boston and that cost them the series. They might not have the flash anymore, but other than Bob, the flash wasn't going to win a cup either. Sometimes having a locker room who wants to be there can count for more than a guy that can go 1 on 5 and score every 5th game.

Agreed. There is no doubt that Panarin was by far the most skilled player on the team, but from a "fit", he was never going to be the right guy for a Torts team. For all the good he did, watch the turnover at the end of game 5 v. Boston that lead to the game-winning goal -- it was just awful. He tried to stick-handle through 4 guys just inside the blueline while his teammates were changing -- with a minute and change left on the clock. Jesus....just chip it deep there.

Ditto for Duchene, except he's not nearly as good.

It's going to make for some ugly hockey, but if they can grind out enough 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 games, I can still see them finding their way into the playoffs. Assuming of course that they get reasonably good goaltending -- if neither Korpi or Elvis can provide that, they are in a world of trouble.

I do get the frustration in that they gave up a lot just to win one round -- if they don't trade for Duchene/Dzingel/et al and pawn off Bob/Bread for a few prospects/picks, the organization would be a in a better place right now. That being said....that Tampa series was priceless in its own way.

As a pens fan...

You guy didn't need Panarin. As Mike pointed out CBJ is a nightmare to play against when they are physical and play fast. I like what CBJ has and if they can solidly get a goaltender they'll be in contention again.

Foligno, Anderson and Texier went somewhere?

It's not nearly as bleak as the sports morons on the radio or on TSN want you to believe. This roster wasn't going to win a Cup even if everyone resigned. Instead they are re-shaping the roster into a more grind it out type game which fits Torts a lot more than what we saw for most of last year.

Didn’t feel listing them all was necessary. The point still remains.
