Jackets: Offense

Thursday, October 9, 2008 3:43 AM

Three weeks of training camp wasn't enough time to sort out all four of the Blue Jackets' forward lines -- not surprising given the number of new faces added over the summer.

The good news, as coach Ken Hitchcock sees it, is that he has enough NHL-capable players to give him lots of possible combinations.
"We couldn't say that last year," he said. "We were forced to play guys that you just hoped could survive."
The No. 1 line could have a different look at home than on the road.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

? Scene: Jan. 8, 2008, the Scottrade Center in St. Louis

? Scenario: Late in the first period, Blue Jackets winger Nikolai Zherdev is drilled coming out of his zone by St. Louis forward David Backes. Zherdev lay on the ice for at least a minute and did not return to the game.
? The response: A few Blue Jackets bump into Backes, and winger Jason Chimera later said he and several others challenged the Blues player. But nothing happened, and the lifeless Blue Jackets lost 6-1.
? The quote: "Zherdev does those moves almost every shift, and once or twice he is going to get caught." -- former Blue Jackets captain Adam Foote

Bob Hunter commentary: Jackets have a lot to prove to loyal but skeptical fans

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Nearly every day, my son, Rob, reads the Blue Jackets stories in the newspaper. Nearly every day, he utters a variation of the same phrase. The one he offered after reading the account of Nikita Filatov's winning shootout goal Sunday in Toronto was another variation.
"Yeah, that Filatov, he's going to be a star."
He broke into a familiar smirk, just to let me know he was only being sarcastic. There was no need. I've heard him say similar things this summer about Jake Voracek, Derick Brassard, Steve Mason, Kris Russell, Alexandre Picard ... well, you get the idea.
He made it clear when the team's rookies reported that he is tired of hearing about how the Columbus players are all destined for stardom and he has reminded me of it nearly every day since. Rob is 20, has been a devoted Jackets fan from day one and -- get ready for a shock -- is tired of seeing his team fail to reach the playoffs.

Jackets notebook: Rookies to be put to the test

Friday, October 10, 2008 3:05 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard sat in his locker room stall yesterday morning listening to teammate R.J. Umberger describe what life was like as a rookie under coach Ken Hitchcock.
"You've got to earn his trust," Umberger told a reporter. "When he has trust in you, he will use you (on the ice) all the time."
Brassard and Jake Voracek are about to experience it for themselves. The rookies are expected to play together on the same line tonight in the Blue Jackets' season opener in Dallas.
Voracek, 19, is making his NHL debut. Brassard, 21, played 17 games for the Jackets last season.

James D. DeCAMP Dispatch
Center Derick Brassard is one of seven new faces in the Blue Jackets lineup for their opening game tonight against the Stars in Dallas.

When the Blue Jackets open the 2008-09 season tonight in Dallas, they'll have a payroll of $49.37 million, roughly $10 million more than last season.
That $10 million says a lot about the changes that have occurred since general manager Scott Howson was hired 16 months ago to clean up Doug MacLean's oil spill.
But it doesn't entirely capture the long, painful and necessary road traveled by Howson, coach Ken Hitchcock and the Blue Jackets to get to this point.
"Last year for us was all about foundation," Hitchcock said. "We felt like we could win. Until we lost in Detroit (on March 19), I felt like we were right in the mix (for the playoffs).

The more of these articles I read, the more pissed I get about Adam Foote. I hope he sticks around long enough for the Jackets to get a run at him. What a fucking dick.
im sure youll see a hard hit or two.

but, im not sure that the dispatch story/tale are dead on. personally im getting a tad tired of the doug/adam rants. at a certain point move on.

side note-if you give a go a no movement clause (better than a no trade clause) he doesnt have to go to the minors or be traded where you want to send him. thats the way it is. he had every right to say ill go there or wont go there. that was in his contract.

on some of the other stuff, yeah and nay. you knew the rugged hard nosed personality you were getting. i think part of it is over blown, part of it is under appreciated, part of it is true and part of it well is pretty close to dead on...

Adam was a good guy.. Much better than you'd think based on those articles. I've met a few people related to CBJ hockey, and Adam's father was the nicest guy I've talked to. Probably the nicest guy I've met in Columbus, honestly. He gave me the impression that Adam (and his family) not only cared for the Blue Jackets, but the city as a whole.

Re: The Blue Jackets will take the ice with seven new faces in the lineup -- centers R.J. Umberger and Brassard, wingers Kristian Huselius and Voracek, and defensemen Tyutin, Backman and Mike Commodore. It would be eight if right winger Raffi Torres weren't recovering from a shoulder injury.

Lot's of new faces. That's over 1/3 of the team; not counting goalies. :)
