expecting nothing until 12:00:01 pm on 7/1/08

1 C($$$)
1 skilled forward ($$)
1 bruiser/stay at home/defensive dman($$)
1 puck mover ($$$$)

thats all ive got... or all im willing to say ive got...

Pardon my ignorance JO, but what position/type of player do you mean by "puck mover"? An offensive defenseman? What are some other NHL comparables of the caliber of player we'd be going for at the $$$$ level?

i hate the term offensive defenseman, unless its a player who plays on the blue line who is awful in his own zone sure... a player who throws nice outlet passes, can jump in on the odd man rush etc. this guy should also be good in his own zone and have #1 pp potential.

$$$$$-would be brian campbell money

i dont know who the two $$ type players could be, they are move flux than the other two. you can make a short list of the number of guys who fit that bill for the C and top pair dman.

huselius, vrbata, hagman, commodore is the middle level.

if you cant get that top center who knows maybe you see an offer tossed at a guy like patrick o'sullivan. but the kings suddenly have tons of money to match. but he mad 600k last year and is due for a nice raise, doesnt have #1 future with kopitar in the fold. maybe he can be had at a reasonable price. i dont see vermette/meszaros type being had for anything that wont cost you a lot in future drafts...

fyi shelley resigned with the sharks for 2 more years.

Great for him, he'll always be a favorite in Columbus. He made $650K last year, and hopefully he got a nice increase in pay with his new contract. :)

SAN JOSE ? San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group III unrestricted free agent left wing Jody Shelley to a two-year contract. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Shelley was acquired by San Jose on Jan. 29, 2008 from Columbus in exchange for a sixth round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. With the Sharks, Shelley posted seven points (1-6=7) and 91 penalty minutes in 31 games. He set a Sharks single-game franchise record by posting 41 penalty minutes at Dallas on April 6. In total, Shelley appeared in 62 games during 2007-08 with Columbus and San Jose and recorded seven points (1-6=7) and 135 penalty minutes.
The six-foot-four, 225-pound native of Thompson, Manitoba appeared in six games during the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He did not record a point and accumulated two penalty minutes.
?From the first day that Jody arrived here, he brought toughness and character,? said Wilson. ?He is one of the most respected players in our room because of his team-first attitude and his willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done.?
Shelley has played in 411 National Hockey League games and has 36 points (12-24=36) and 1,116 penalty minutes. The 32-year-old was originally signed by Columbus as a free agent on Feb. 1, 2001.

things to keep in mind

1-you have to overpay to get free agents-thats the nature of free agency. its not like baskebtall with a large cap increase everyone has money
2-id guess 45 deals will go down in the first 48 hours. so if something doesnt go down before you go to bed tonite it doesnt mean its over
3-rfas are even more expensive than ufas
4-after 1-2 weeks some nice quality role players will still be on the market.

hope everyone is excited as me

Just because a team has cap room doesn't mean thay have to spend it by overpaying for players. Like you said JO, there will be some very nice role players available after the initial rush.

I'd hate to see the CBJ overpay for Morrison, but players need monetary incentives to play in certain markets as opposed to others and C-bus is one of those.

Any word on an extension for Umberger or how much he wants?

1-the cbj has to spend to the floor. that a mount is a pretty decent chunk. theyve got what 24m on the books. that means they have to increase that by 16m or face penalties. how bad does a franchise look when they dont hit the floor and get tagged for that?
2-you have to overpay everyone, its free agency. less than 25% of players actually get a discuount like people think.
3-i think rj will get an offer sheet, it will be matched.

t-minus 70 mins till the faxes/phone calls and emails start flying!
