Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Not to get away from the Blue Jackets problems but I would think that Toronto would be one hell of a hockey city. I thought they were one of the original eight. I can see "warmer" weather cities having problems but I would think the people of Canada would be used to a little chill.

So as far as revenue goes, the best professional sport to compare hockey would be baseball. They each have to have feeder systems and it is sort of big market again small-market or is that incorrect.

i was referring to just maintaing the ice, at the nhl and other levels. the more sheets of ice you have the more hockey players you have. the more hockey players the more fans...

agreed with the baseball thing also. but you have a hard cap and a hard floor.

fyi duvie wescott was put on waivers. lets see if anyone claims him... (no one will)

Jackets: Westcott won't be back in Columbus

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets will place defenseman Duvie Westcott on waivers at noon today, The Dispatch has learned. If Westcott clears, which is considered likely, the club will buy out the remaining two years on his contract.
"It's tough," Westcott said by phone from Minneapolis yesterday. "I have a lot of great memories in Columbus. The Blue Jackets were the first team to give me a shot, and I really wanted to play hockey there.
"But it just didn't work out for me with the kind of player I am. (Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock) likes big, physical defensemen, and that's not what I am. So this is what it comes to, I guess."

Michael Arace commentary: Jackets won't move anytime soon, but the idea isn't folly

There is a notion that the Blue Jackets' franchise is unstable, and can be easily packaged for transport to Kansas City, Mo., or Hamilton, Ontario. This notion is not born of random patter.
Although the Jackets have improved their on-ice product -- from 62 points in 2003-04, before the lockout, to 80 points last season -- they've been well behind the curve of other recent expansion teams. They're the only team in the 30-team league that has yet to make the playoffs.
This failure, combined with a checkered his-tory in the draft and the free-agent market has fed an ever-growing frustration among fans as ticket prices have risen. Attendance has steadily declined, from an average of 17,369 in 2005-06 to 15,146 last season. Red ink has pooled in Nationwide Arena.

Blue Jackets notebook
GM denies Russian team still has rights to top pick

Sunday, June 29, 2008 3:15 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson yesterday disputed a report on the International Ice Hockey Federation's Web site that forward Nikita Filatov, the Jackets' No. 1 pick in last weekend's draft, still has one year remaining on his contract with a Russian club.
"That is not our understanding," Howson said, declining to comment further.
The IIHF report, written by the federation's communications director Szymon Szemberg, was posted Friday.
According to the article, officials from Russia's new professional league, the Continental Hockey League, believe Filatov has one year remaining on his contract with CSKA Moscow, also known as Central Army.

Jackets' checkbook open for free agents
Money is available to go after up to four players

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
NHL_06-29-08_C1_RF1AFLR.jpg

Once noon arrives Tuesday, the Blue Jackets will enter the NHL's free agency bonanza with their largest wad of summer spending cash since they joined the NHL eight seasons ago.
They're willing to spend $12 million to $15 million on the following pursuits: at least two defensemen and one, maybe two, forwards.
"I would expect us to have four or five serious conversations shortly after noon," general manager Scott Howson said. "I know in my mind what we're doing. We have a plan we're ready to execute."
Howson's biggest pursuit will be defensemen, an area of weakness for the Blue Jackets since day one.

Does anyone really believe that they are actually losing money?

The fact that Howson didn't comment further is very troubling to me for some reason.

Who the hell knows what's going on over there in Russia? For all we know they ripped up his old contract and created a new one with two more years on it!

on a year to year baseline basis yes. the initial investment. no.

the rich are getting richer again and the poor are barely a float. you dont see people selling "good investments" the bolts and preds wouldnt be for sale if their owners were making money...

factor in the looney vs the dollar.

Soaring Canadian dollar changing the NHL's economics

ps the dispatch has a nice ufa full page spread today. check it out.

Totally agree if Howson made a mistake it will come back and bite him big time. I don't think the Russians care about governing bodies. They just do what they want to do and the hell with the rest of the world especially in... everything:(

I would be interested in your predictions on who the Blue Jackets might go after and possibly sign. Try picking out 4 defenseman and two centers and we can go from there or do you think they will look at forwards rather than centers.
