Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

I like the Umberger addition. He's certainly going to love centering a line with Nash. He didn't have big numbers in Philly, but he was only getting 3rd line minutes. He plays physical and very well defensively. I wouldn't call him a #1 center but he's better than any other center they have.

I like the Filatov pick. After the Leafs traded to get Schenn, you have take Filatov. Anytime you can take the top Russian available, you take him. Whenever he's ready, he'll be a good one.

One more thing: Philly sucks! Agree with whome ver said it's hard to root for Umberger when he was a Flyboy.

I've found it so tough to follow the Blue Jackets and the NHL since the strike. The only way would be to buy the NHL Center Ice package, not living in Ohio. I hope their off season will convince me to spend the $ on that as well, I already buy the NBA package.

Ok, so Umberger can "potenially" be the #1 Center. Are there any #1 Centers in FA that Columbus would have a true chance with?

Our Blue Jacket mavens of the board.... do you think Howson will go out and get a handful of C players and maybe 1 or 2 B players in FA? Or do you believe he has the ability, along with Hitch to piece together a team that has a chance to win? Maybe picking up an A- B+ first line center, and a solid Defenseman.... to go along with a handful of impact players.

Frustration will unleash majorily if the Blue Jackets don't make the playoffs this year.

I've been saying that for years now. But I keep going to games, so I'm just going to stop making veiled threats.

Go Jackets! Win, lose or draw. But it sure would be nice if they started winning. Downtown Columbus would be a great place to be come playoff time next year.

Last year was the first year I didn't go to a game. I've been to 12, they've won once. I don't like spending $30 to get depressed, so I just didn't do it last year. I want to go this year. They need to get it going.

With the amount of money that they have to spend on FA's, and they had better spend it and upgrade this team or they are going to start and lose more of their fan base. If they would make it to the playoffs, I think Columbus would go :groove2:and I can't see why the front office does not see that.

If they can score a couple defensemen is FA there is no reason this team could not make a run at the 8th playoff spot.

next year's bottom of the playoff rung will be populated by teams like Columbus, Colorado, Trashville, Dallas, Minny and Chicago.

Detroit should still be the class of the division, but there's no reason Columbus can't be a competitive second.

Michael Arace commentary: Jackets got better but didn't wow their fans

OTTAWA -- The text messages, blog comments and cell-phone calls have come apace since the first round of the NHL draft was completed Friday night. Words like "disaster" and "choke" and phrases like "Bengals on ice" are being tossed out to describe the Blue Jackets' performance in Scotiabank Place.
We've come a long way in Columbus. The annual draft, a time of rebirth and promise, has turned into another opportunity to rip management. That is practically Canadian.
Fans understand that franchise sustenance depends largely on drafting well and stocking the farm system. But after eight spotty drafts and seven losing seasons, the Jackets remain a nondescript team, and nobody cares how many quality fifth-round picks and third-line forwards they have.

Continued.......

The only problem that I have with this past weekend is all we have heard since the season ended is "get ready for a big summer" and "we're going to make a splash with two first round picks and lots of money to spend."

I'm not saying that Howson was out there saying these things, but he certainly didn't dissuade the media from saying them. Now what happened this past weekend? Nothing really. I love that RJ is coming back to Columbus and he certainly will be an upgrade, but he isn't the center that Howson talked about getting. And now I don't think that center is out there. I thought for sure that Marleau would be in Columbus when all was said and done and now it looks like he's still going to be SJ Shark.

I'm happy that the team is better than they were on Friday, but RJ Umberger isn't the significant upgrade at center that I as a fan was looking for. I'm pretty sure that it's not what Rick Nash was looking for either. Hope I'm wrong, but past history concerning the Blue Jackets certainly doesn't fill me with optimism about the upcoming season.

We probably will have to wait for JO "Mr. Hockey" to come back before we get the full skinny but I think July 1 becomes a magical date because I believe after that you can start sending free agents. If they do not make a big splash with a couple big signings this year, I think you are right on target that there are great to be a lot of unhappy campers.

July 1 is what I'm worried about. What FA are out there that could be considered a significant upgrade? I just don't think they are out there this year. JO?? Give me something to believe in!!!
