I'm still not getting what Howson did here.

Maybe they figured out they were out of the running for Richards and decided to deal the expiring contracts to at least get SOMETHING in return? It wouldn't surprise me if Foote resigns with Columbus this summer if that is the case.....

If that isn't the case then I don't know. They will have some serious cap room this summer to make a run at someone though.....perhaps Sundin and Hossa together???

By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As of 10 a.m. yesterday, with the NHL trade deadline five hours away, Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson still wasn't sure if he was a buyer or a seller.
But the question was answered for him a short while later.
Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Jay Feaster called Howson to say that center Brad Richards was being traded to the Dallas Stars instead of the Blue Jackets.
"We were trying to add," Howson said. "When we couldn't add the piece we really wanted to add, it was time to make other decisions. So we managed the assets we had."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

JAMES D. DECAMP | DISPATCH
General manager Scott Howson said the Blue Jackets "wanted to add," but things changed after the team missed out on Brad Richards.

On the last day of the season, in the customary gesture of appreciation, the Blue Jackets will remove their jerseys and hand them to fans in the stands. This year, fans will get two jerseys apiece because, by April 6, there will be twice as many players as paying customers in the building.
Yesterday, trade deadline day, was marked by a lack of boldness in Nationwide Arena. General manager Scott Howson couldn't swing a deal for Tampa Bay center Brad Richards. Howson couldn't get a contract done with Adam Foote. Howson couldn't quite bring himself to gut the team and stockpile assets.

What's the point of adding Hossa if you don't have a center worth a damn on your roster outside of Mike Peca??

I mean it isn't like Columbus has a Pavel Datsyuk in the minors just waiting to be called up.

Well, because the Jackets have no chance of signing Sundin, that's the point. Why even mention a 38 year old center? Maybe they can talk Ron Francis out of retirement.

he will resign in denver. i said it before it was going to take 3.75m to do the deal. howson didnt want to budge over 3.5m, when that was made clear foote made the choice not to take less than his original offer. 3.75m would have gotten it done.

the cbj werent going to land mats, he wasnt going to waive his no movement clause, no way he was going to sign that waiver to go to columbus, he wasnt willing to waive it to go anywhere...

youve got brassard, you cant put that load on a 19 year old kid. acutally hes jsut been sent back to cuse. then you have brule, hes probably pegged at this point to turn into a peca style 2/3 centre. you need a #1 pivot for that first line. reality is nash and z wont play together they both are better with the puck, split those two up.

looking at the ufa list for this year you have few if any ufas worth signing. will scott make a push for marleau or another pivot on the blocks this summer, is he worth the two #1s the cbj now have.

lots of options with those two picks, you also can go steal someone with an offer sheet this summer...

FYI for Blue Jackets fans - there's now a vBet on how the team will fare in the playoffs this season, within the same forum as this thread. It's open for betting until Monday night.
