Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Another shutout for LeClaire....

Big win tonight, Chicago is one of the teams the CBJ are in direct competition with for one of the last playoff spots (figuring no one is catching Detroit in the division).....

Better yet....

Coloardo lost again and while they hold the 8th spot for now (and have a game in hand), they also are without just about any of their big scoring forwards not named Svatos....Minnesota beat them and went from 7th place to 3rd with 59 points over San Jose who also has 59 points at the time of this post and then won, giving them 61 and putting THEM in 2nd ahead of Minny and Dallas - damn the West is fun....

Also, Anaheim is losing 3-0 to the crappy Kings and they are only 4 points ahead at this moment in time. They have an appreciably harder schedule for the next month than the Blue Jackets do too.

These next couple weeks will likely make or break the Jackets. They need to get hot and be able to enter March in the 7th or 8th spot with over 75 points or so.....I personally think they can do it.

EDIT: And I posted it before I was ready....

Calgary, Vancouver, Colorado, Edmonton and Dallas will beat the crap out of each other coming down the stretch. Given the injuries Colorado has and the fact they have Jose the Greaseball as their main goalie, I don't think they can get there.

Calgary has that one great player in Iginla who will essentially will his team into the playoffs even if they are first round fodder...

Edmonton still hasn't recovered from losing Pronger and Smyth after their Stanley Cup run. Still a decent team and a tough win every night though.

Dallas is the "best" team of the bunch but they have significant issues scoring too. They are probably the best defensive team in the bunch.

Vancouver is weird. They have some injuries but Luongo is showing that while a good goalie, he won't win you a cup at this point.

If I had to pick right now, I think Dallas will win this division along with Calgary and maybe Vancouver making the playoffs.

The Blue Jackets' Ole-Kristian Tollefsen fights for the puck with the Blackhawks' Jacob Dowell.

CHICAGO -- The biggest trip in the history of the Blue Jackets will go down as one of their best, too.
A 1-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks last night in front of 16,094 in the United Center sent the Blue Jackets into the All-Star break in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CHICAGO -- The Blue Jackets' plane was expected to return to Columbus half-empty last night.
Left winger Rick Nash stayed behind in Chicago and was planning to catch a flight to Atlanta, where Sunday he'll play in the All-Star Game.
A slew of other players spent the night in Chicago and flew today to other locales for a three-day break. Defenseman Jan Hejda and wife are taking their 7-year-old daughter, Natalie, to Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Defenseman Kris Russell and right winger Jared Boll are off to Toronto to visit Russell's brother.

Bob Hunter commentary: As Jackets get better, so do record-holders

At the beginning of this season, Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre ranked eighth in games played on the Blue Jackets' all-time list, but Nikolai Zherdev, Manny Malhotra and Jason Chimera have since blown past him.
hunter25.IMG_01-25-08_C1_SB95I34.jpg

Going into the season, Brett Harkins was third on the Blue Jackets' all-time assists-per-game list at 0.48.
You remember Harkins, don't you? He was, uh ? wait a minute, now I do remember: He was an Ohio guy. The Blue Jackets' brain trust was happy to have him because he had a huge upside and was about to take a step, and besides, it foresaw a stampede of Harkins fans to the Nationwide Arena ticket office.
Well, not so much. It turned out Harkins played only 25 games for the team in 2001-02, and he hasn't stepped on an NHL ice surface since. Last thing I could find about him on the Internet, the former Bowling Green player (yes, I looked that up) was in Sweden with R?gle BK. As they say in Sweden, R-O-G-L-E ? B-K!

The post the other night made me want to sit down now that we are at the All-Star break and assess the CBJ chances at making the playoffs.

Figuring that my favorite team is in (and probably on their way to another President's Trophy), I would really like to see Columbus get in to the playoffs so there is a shot I could conceivably go to some games :groove:

In the central division, the race is all but over. Columbus is in 2nd place with 56 points (Detroit has 78). A 22-point lead at this point is damned near unheard of. Nashville has 55 points, St. Louis has 51 and Chicago has 50. Not a horrible division by any stretch, and it is arguably deeper than at this point last year.

In the Northwest, Minnesota (59) has a one point lead over Calgary (58) and a two point lead over Vancouver (57) and a three point lead over Colorado (56). Edmonton brings up the rear at 51 points. If ever there was a division with no clear leader, it's this one. Literally Vancouver entered the week with the lead and Minnesota in 3rd. Now it's the other way around. This division also has the chance to beat the crap out of itself with only Edmonton likely to miss the playoffs.

In the Pacific, we have San Jose (61) and Dallas (61) leading with San Jose getting the tie break at this point. Anaheim (60) is right there as well. Phoenix at 54 points is in the race for a spot since they picked up Ilya Bryzgalov (I didn't have to look that name up either  ). Only Los Angeles is completely out of the race right now.

Out of the 3 divisions, I think the winners will be:

Detroit (obvious), San Jose/Anaheim (Anaheim is the better team, but San Jose has been more consistent) and Minnesota (better mix of talent than Calgary or Vancouver).

So that is spots 1-3 in this order:

Detroit
San Jose/Anaheim
Minnesota

The loser of the San Jose/Anaheim race will be the 4th seed.

After that, there WILL be a jumble of teams.

Calgary has probably the best player in the bunch with Iginla, but Iggy has no help this year. He'll likely get them into the playoffs but they'll get detonated in the first round.

Vancouver is in a similar situation. With the injuries they've faced so far, it is kind of surprising they are were they are. Roberto Luongo is a good regular season goalie who usually finds a way to lose a game or two in the playoffs by making a stupid play (like he did in the last game against Columbus). Right now I'd say they will also make the playoffs and get bombed in the first round too.

I think Dallas is almost a lock for a spot given that on any given night not against Detroit, they will be the better defensive team. IN fact, this team is better at defense than the one that won the Stanley Cup under Hitch back in 1999.

That leaves one spot for what looks to be 4 teams: Colorado, Columbus, Nashville and Phoenix.

Colorado has a ton of injuries to their forwards. If they were healthy, Colorado probably would win their division, but they aren't. They don't have any consistent goaltending to speak of.

Columbus has the PK and defense to make it along with the goaltending, but scoring consistently can and will remain an issue.

Nashville is a team that has a system on defense that needs to work every night for them to be competitive. When it works, they can beat anyone except Detroit and probably Dallas or Anaheim. When it doesn't the Kings can beat them handily.

Phoenix is a bit of a surprise given where they started the year. Bryzgalov gave them a #1 goalie who can play every night.

Out of this group, the best chances are, IMO, Colorado 50/50, Columbus 45/55 and Phoenix 30/70.

We will know soon enough, Columbus has a very managable stretch coming up where they could easily end up with 10 points in 2 weeks which would really help their cause. Colorado is scraping by with the skin of their teeth and that won't be changing anytime soon. If they get down early, they won't catch up. Also Colorado has a much harder schedule over the next 40 days than just about anyone else. They play virtually every single playoff contender plus St Louis twice and Chicago (who has owned them so far) twice. Phoenix plays in a division where everyone but the Kings are competitive so there likely won't be very many easy nights for them either.

Best Guess right now:

1. Detroit

2. Anaheim

3. Minnesota

4. San Jose

5. Dallas

6. Calgary

7. Vancouver

8. Columbus

ATLANTA -- The NHL's All-Star weekend is here and Pascal Leclaire is not. Leclaire only leads all NHL goaltenders in shutouts (eight) and save percentage (.928) and has the second-best goals-against average (2.00). He doesn't rate All-Star status. Who picked the subs? Jared Fogle?
Leclaire is taking a breather in Montreal. The regular season is in temporary repose. It is a time to take stock and mull the Blue Jackets.

CHICAGO -- During a 17-year NHL career, Blue Jackets center Sergei Fedorov has played in 162 playoff games, almost the equivalent of two NHL seasons.
So while other Blue Jackets players can barely contain their glee that a playoff chase has finally come, Fedorov is analytical about what lies ahead.
"We know who we are now as a hockey team," Fedorov said. "And when you know that, you play with confidence every night."

ATLANTA -- MTV host Aliya-Jasmine Sovani was right at home yesterday morning as she flitted about the interview area inside Philips Arena, site of NHL All-Star Game today. Sovani, according to her MySpace bio, grew up in Ottawa, loves the Senators and counts Hockey Night in Canada among her favorite television shows. After Mrs. Arace, she might be the perfect woman.
Sovani, cameraman in tow, waited patiently for her shot at Rick Nash. Then, she then hit him with a barrage of rapid-fire questions that were pure street hockey. An abbreviated peek at the exchange:

Blue Jackets fans are about to get a crash course in Stanley Cup playoffs math.

Part of the excitement of an NHL playoff push each spring is the daily jockeying for position, the wild turn the standings can take, all while weighing the need for two points against the promise of "games in hand."
Get ready, central Ohio. You've waited eight years for your first taste.
If the Blue Jackets can stay in the Western Conference playoff picture -- they're tied with eighth-place Colorado, but in ninth place because of one fewer win -- February, March and early April won't be dominated by college basketball any longer.

Howson must decide which road to take

Sunday, January 27, 2008 3:29 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson deserves a lot of credit for the moves he has made -- and hasn't made -- since he was hired last summer.

But Howson's job is about to get a lot more pressure-packed, and his first big challenge is drawing near. The trade deadline is one month from yesterday -- 3 p.m. Feb. 26. Between now and mid-February, Howson must decide if the Blue Jackets will be a buyer or a seller at the deadline.

The Versus announcers must not have heeded the warning as they talked at some length about Leclaire and his credentials. However, the annoucers didn't say he was snubbed, just blamed the depth of talent for Leclaire not being there.
