THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Trailing mortal enemy DeSales 7-6 with time ticking down in the fourth quarter of the Division III regional quarterfinal last night, Watterson's football players were smacked in the face by what was at stake.

"When we got in the huddle for the last drive, I looked the guys square in the eyes and said, 'Fellas, this is our season. We've got to have it. This is for the rest of our lives,'" Eagles senior quarterback Patrick Rhomberg said.

Indeed, it proved to be yet another Watterson-DeSales game for the ages.

Rhomberg capped a 14-play, 84-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown keeper around left end with 19 seconds remaining, giving top-seeded Watterson a 14-7 win before a euphoric crowd at Hagely Field.

Hey - look at that - I figured out the search function. Hurray for me.

Anyway, I don't usually follow high school football, but my nephew plays for Bishop Watterson. They came to NE Ohio a couple of weeks ago to play Chardon, and they look really good. I heard rumors that it was #2 vs. #3 in Div-3, and Watterson won 41-9. They made it to the State championship game last year and lost to someone in Toledo. Toledo Central Catholic, probably?

They're 6-0 right now, with 4 games remaining. 3 of those games are "home" games, but from what I understand, they don't play any of their games on campus. (I forget where they play their home games.)

If I understand it correctly, both Bellisari brothers who played for the Buckeyes are on the coaching staff, and both have a son on the team. I believe the quarterback is Greg's son, and a really good receiver is Steve's son. (Maybe I have that backward, though.)

They have a really big guy on their o-line. I'm not going to pretend to be able to judge skill, but he looks like a college player, already, amongst all those kids.

And against Chardon, they had some nose tackle (I think he was #33) who seemed small, but if he only got 100 tackles for loss, then the guy keeping track lost count.

I really hope I'm not jinxing it, but these guys seem really good. Hopefully they have another shot at the state championship.

My sisters both went to Watterson so my folks still go to most of the games and I follow casually as a result.

You are correct that it is Greg's son that is the QB although Steve is the QB coach. I'm not sure about the other Bellisari on the roster.

Former Buckeye Jeff Uhlenhake's sons both play for Watterson, too. Jake at WR and Ben at RB.

Steve's son is one of the starting CBs. Uhlenhake's older son, Jake, is the stud WR. The big starting OT is a junior and has some MAC offers but seems to be on campus every weekend at a power 4 school (ND, Wisconsin, UC...) #33 is a sophomore (undersized for now) DT and was the D2 state wrestling champ at 165lbs as a freshman. Toledo Central Catholic is a different kind of animal in D3 football but the future is very bright for Watterson. More son's of Buckeyes in the feeder schools (another Hoying, another Rudzinski, John Simon...)

Maybe I was thinking of Uhlenhake's son at wide receiver. But I could have sworn Steve's son also was on the team.

Maybe that's what I heard: The QB's son is a CB, and the LB's son is a QB.

I remember the Toledo team seemed way bigger and faster, but they made some mistakes that Watterson was able to capitalize on, and took a 7-0 lead. I don't remember the final score, but the game felt like it wasn't as close as the score was.
