Anyway, BKB is right about Greek wrestling "tournaments," which were similar - but not the same as - modern playoffs. You could draw up a bracket of these competitions that resembles a modern bracket. Often they were seeded by lot and as often winners were reseeded, but this was not always the case. Is it exactly the same? No. But it is similar enough for the accuracy level required of an internet convo.
My objection wouldn't be so much that the structure of the ancient Olympics differed from that of any proposed college football playoff. It would be that i) the ancient Olympics weren't the post-season to some organized regular season, thus they aren't relevant, and ii) citing a single religious/athletic festival doesn't exactly establish the received wisdom of millennia. But enough of the archaeology. It's an interesting conversation, potentially, but not really on-topic.

Not to go all Attic here, but we're talking non-Olympic wrestling tournaments. This is not an Olympic event, it's a wholly separate contest. If you give me some time (and you actually care) I'll dig the name of the tournaments out of my bookshelf. I'd tell you right now but frankly, it's all Greek to me.

I'm sure if I dig around enough I could find something similar to a bracketed tournament in gladiatorial events in Roman culture, most likely something along those lines in the lists of the Medieval Ages, and likely something similar in polo or fencing or some other such contest. Isn't the America's Cup a bracketed tournament, or am I imagining that.

Regardless, even if we could find bracketed, seeded tournaments dating back to Cro-Magnon man, it really wouldn't matter, would it? It's a [Mark May]y point, and I'm sorry I brought it up. I apologize for calling your wife a bloated warthog, and I bid you a good day.

So what's ultimately the point of referring to all this ancient history and other sports? All I know is bowl and polls have been how major college football has ended its season since time immemorial. There is simply no other precedent in this greatest of American sports. It started with 1, the Rose Bowl, the grandaddy that decided the 1901-02 national champ, and while the proliferation of bowls made it tricky (i.e. fun) sometimes over the years to decide who was ultimately the best, the BCS gave CFB back its single national championship bowl game that has served the game well and given us 14* well-deserving national champions. Who cares how anyone else ever did it--this is Sparta!

I have no idea what any of you people are talking about.

And they've seen that dispite their tweaks it still sucks. They won't want to lock themselves down with another systems for long period. They'll go the four-team route for only 4-5 years and then use any "controversy" as an excuse to expand to either eight or 16 teams.

Sometimes it's just fun to "tweak" the grammar nazi (especially since I'm one myself).

His computer is so used to typing "dipshit" that it automatically enters the "i" any time a word starts with a "d".

The 2189 BCE semifinal match between Gilgamesh and Nimrod was EPIC!

The officiating was terrible! :pissed:
