College Football Playoff (2016-2017 Season)

Buckeyes will be #2 on Tuesday. So to not make the playoffs (assuming we win out), three teams would have to jump us.

Now, which teams, exactly, would those be?

Relax.
It depends how much the committee values having a conference champion. If that is something they value then Clemson, Big Ten Champion, and Washington could all jump in over us.

So far a team hasn't made the playoffs that doesn't have a conference championship. Now it's a little different this year because Ohio State will have to beat 3 really tough Big Ten teams plus Oklahoma and Penn State got to skip Nebraska and Wisconsin while losing to TTUN.

Well, #2, #3, and #4 lost today. We are number #5 does that move us up to #2?

If Ohio State ends up 11-1 and does not go to the B1G10 Championship game (i.e. Ped State has the head to head tiebreaker), can Ohio State still make it to the CFPs?
OSU will be 2 this week. PSU or Wisky will win the conference, but I don't think they will have enough to dislodge us 3 spots, but they may be able to surpass Louisville and ttun for the 4 spot by winning the conference. Clemson will probably sit at 4/5 this week, but jump to 2 by winning ACC. PAC championship will be 1 loss Washington that the committee hates or 2 loss Colorado. Neither will crack top 4 right now. Pac looks like 2 loss Oklahoma or 1 loss WV, neither will likely make the jump. I see it as Wisky/Bama and Clemson/OSU. Could also be Louisville/Bama and Clemson/ttun.

I think we need to start looking at the field in the abstract and not just as OSU fans.

I just whipped this up off the current (about to change on Tuesday) CFP rankings. A "?" means it hasn't been played and it's my best guess as to opponent.

Biggest thing to remember to save some people stomach lining is that the Conf Champ thing is a tie breaker between teams of a similar record. What we do not know for sure is if they will jump a 2 loss team over a 1 loss team because of a conference championship.

So looking at the field here is my weakest to strongest
  1. Louisville
  2. 2 loss B1G champ
  3. Pac 12 Champ UW
  4. At Large OSU
  5. ACC Champ Clemson
3 of those 5 have to get in

EDIT

Penn State losses should read "at Pitt"

Upon further review---this is how our chances look...
-PSU loss and we control our own destiny
-Louisville & Washington loss and we're overwhelmingly likely in
-Louisville loss and very likely in
-Clemson loss and very likely in

If everyone on consequence wins out then it's a #2 OSU vs.....
-Washington--committee would more than likely punish them for their non-conference schedule and put us in
-BIG12 champ --doesn't matter
-Louisville-I think the odds are with OSU considering we're already ranked higher and would have defeated tsun
-BIG10 champ PSU or Wisc--no clue

The way I see it the only thing we need if everyone wins out is to be put ahead of Washington and either Louisville or the BIG10 champ. Overall, our odds are good.

Link to CFP selection protocols document

The criteria to be provided to the selection committee must be aligned with the ideals of the commissioners, Presidents, athletic directors and coaches to honor regular season success while at the same time providing enough flexibility and discretion to select a non-champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non-champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country.

Unequivocally one of the best 4 teams in the country....that is the part we as OSU fans should pay attention to if OSU wins out.
