College Football Playoff (2015-16 Season)

http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/201...-new-years-eve-cotton-orange-espn-viewership/

Blowouts, New Year’s Eve, Sink College Football Playoff Semis
BY PAULSEN ON 01/01/2016 RATINGS, COLLEGE FOOTBALL, ESPN

Ratings and viewership always likely to drop for year two of the College Football Playoff, but a pair of New Year’s Eve blowouts resulted in significant declines.

Thursday’s Alabama/Michigan State Cotton Bowl, part of the College Football Playoff, drew a 9.6 rating and 18.6 million viewers on ESPN according to the Associated Press — down 37% in ratings and 34% in viewership from Ohio State/Alabama in last year’s comparable Sugar Bowl (15.2, 28.3M).

The Clemson/Oklahoma Orange Bowl had a 9.0 and 15.6 million earlier in the day, down 39% and 45%, respectively, from last year’s Oregon/Florida State Rose Bowl (14.8, 28.2M).

Last year’s games were the two most-watched programs in cable television history at the time, and currently rank second and third. Neither of this year’s games even cracked the top ten, with the Cotton Bowl ranking 16th. Further, the games rank as the lowest rated bowls with championship implications since the formation of the Bowl Coalition in 1992.

Today would have been a perfect day for the College Football Playoff

It comes down to preseason rankings for me. OSU showed very little to indicate we were a playoff team until Michigan, yet we were still 3rd going into Sparty. The Spartans also benefited from catapulting off the often overhyped 7th ranked(?!?!?!) Ducks.

People also need to realize that Baylor and TCU aren't powerhouse teams. They can be dangerous, but really the BXII has just fallen to the point where they are the top of the league. Oklahoma had no business getting vaulted up for those wins.

They excluded the defending champs despite 3 of the 4 participants having the same records. Talk all you like about conference champions and "when a team loses", buy it's pretty clear that the whole "4 best teams" in CFB are not in the playoff

Some bias here, but as right as they seemed to have gotten it last year, they got it all the way wrong this year. Talking across the board failure.

Horrible.

Even last year they didn't get the best 4 teams in. I understand why they needed to put FSU in, but they were not a top 4 team. But that's even more reason why 8 teams truly is the right number. 16 teams would include far too many undeserving teams, including many 3 loss teams (and probably some 4 loss teams). 4 teams misses several very deserving teams while at the same time increases the chances of fucking up a selection. Having 2 shitty teams in a 4 team playoff is horrible (msu and oklahoma). But in an 8 team playoff the teams you didn't put in over those shitty teams will be in. And teams #9-16 don't have nearly the argument of deserving to get in considering they will all have 2-4 losses, whereas teams #5-8 will all be 1 or 2 loss teams.

The four best teams in 2015 were Clemson, Bama, Osu, and stanford. In an 8 team field Clemson would have beaten ND, there would have been an epic rematch of Bama vs osu, stanford would have beaten msu, and Oklahoma probably would have beaten Iowa. It's not even that hard to do. Just have round 1 two weeks after the conference championship games at the top seeds home field. Perhaps to have a truly unique experience, you still have a 50/50 split of tickets.

At the same time, I don't see how anyone could justify putting Ohio State in over MSU.
As much as it sucks, only have ourselves to blame.
For silver linings, I'll accept Bama taking their vengeance out on Sparty. Getting tired of splitting games with Dantonio though.

I can:

1. In the history of college football rankings, it is not all that uncommon for a team to be ranked ahead of a team that beat them.

2. Sparty now has 2 losses; Ohio State just has one.

3. Ohio State's loss to Sparty was on the last play of the game (i.e. after time expired). Sparty never actually lead at any point in the game with actual time still on the clock.

4. Sparty got blown out (actually humiliated) in their bowl game. Ohio State dominated and won their bowl game over a quality opponent.

But like you say: "(We) only have ourselves to blame."

I think he's referring to putting OSU in over MSU for the playoffs. OSU will absolutely be ahead of MSU in the final rankings. I'm guessing #4 behind Clemson/Bama/Stanford.

Can't say I disagree with this ESPN guy...

Reranking teams that made the New Year's Six

So why don't we rerank the 12 teams that made up the CFP and New Year's Six?

i
1. Alabama: The Crimson Tide opened up a can of whup butt against Michigan State, looking dynamic on both sides of the ball in a 38-0 throttling. Since losing to a good Ole Miss team on Sept. 19, Alabama has won 11 in a row, with only one victory by fewer than two touchdowns. Only one foe scored more than 16 points against what might be Nick Saban's best defense.

i
2. Clemson: The Tigers dominated Oklahoma, the nation's hottest team before the playoff, but their quality wins during the regular season took a hit when Notre Dame, Florida State and North Carolina all decisively lost bowl games and the ACC went 4-5 in bowls overall. Still, the Tigers remain the nation's only undefeated team and they'll certainly get a shot to move up to the top on Jan. 11.

i
3. Ohio State: The Buckeyes know they blew their playoff shot by losing at home to Michigan State. After whipping Notre Dame in the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl, they didn't whine about being left out of the playoff. That said, their high regard for themselves matches what most observers believe: Ohio State is one of the nation's best four teams.

i
4. Stanford: To be honest, the only reason Stanford jumps Oklahoma here is what the Sooners did against Clemson, which was fall apart in the second half. The Cardinal manhandled Iowa in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual and that suggests, at the very least, that they might have given Clemson or Alabama more trouble because they are stouter at the line of scrimmage than Oklahoma.
