Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

How'd that work out in Lincoln last time?...
Well, in fairness, Riley is a far better coach than Bill Callahan ever was on his absolute best day. Like I said, I don't think it's a disastrous hire, just an uninspired one. Not sure it's worth eating a $7M buyout of a coach that won you 9-10 games a year to bring in a guy that'll likely do the same but be less gruff with the media.

Hard to judge Riley based solely on his record in Corvalis given the Oregon St job is probably the worst in the PAC12. He develops his players as well as anyone, which is what Nebraska needs.

But he's 61. They might as well have offered the job to Bill Snyder.

Winning at Oregon State isn't particularly easy. I think bringing some offense into Nebraska will be good.

The time to hire him would have been around ten years ago, IMO. Oregon State is trending downward.

There's two better coaches to the north and south of him.
Shaw or Leach. I'm just like....wow.

I'm sure it's pretty hard to compete regularly against Oregon at this point. We can agree to disagree, but I suspect that Riley will work out well. As for his age, yeah he's 61-which probably means you get 6-9 years if he works out. In this age, that's probably not too shabby.

They might actually see him as a bridge to Scott Frost. Everybody seems to want Frost to come home, but I think corn's probably leery about hiring a coach with no HC experience. This way, you get probably 6-7 years out of Riley who probably keeps you on the same path as Bo with maybe less embarrassing losses and more upsets, and Frost can cut his teeth as a HC somewhere else before "coming home."

They ate Bo's $7M+ buyout for this?
I have to agree, I like Mike Riley a lot, he seems like a really good man who won't embarrass his school or his players. He is a decent football coach. His team didn't quit on him after losing to Eastern Washington a couple of years ago...but they still lost to fucking EASTERN WASHINGTON. I can see him making a doormat into a respectable opponent who beats some people at home...so he would be perfect at Maryland or Illinois or Purdue. But at a place where they want to think national stage? Meh, I'm not seeing it.

Scott Frost's dad tells 10/11 Scott knows Mike Riley well. Interpret as you wish...

Mike Riley’s offense is West Coast blend of Pro Style w multiple formation trades, motions and shifts. He’ll adapt to team strengths.
