Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

I agree, but tOSU is a bigger program than Wiscy as well. I'd love to see a show of hands on who was happy with hiring JT the day it was announced. I'm pretty sure my initial response was "WTF".

<raises hand>

I was calling for JT as far back as 1996 or so, after another Cooper failure against TSUN. But, I'm from Youngstown and JT wasn't a secret to us up here in NE Ohio. I understand I was in the minority at the time though.

Tressel was questioned because the bar is so high at OSU that landing a top 5 class is expected.

At Wisconsin, fans (and rivals) will say he is recruiting well if he merely lands Antonio Henton, Dane Sanzenbacher and Rory Nicol in the same class.

I played a few games against JT at YSU and hated him. :p

My line at the time was that I thought he would do a good job coaching up the players, but would have a hard time bringing in OSU level talent. It proved to be that he had no trouble bringing in top Ohio talent, but had some issues coaching up some of them. cough o-line cough

Looking back I wouldn't change a thing. I think he did a great job, but I also think tOSU is in a better place now for what went down a couple years ago.

JT was also an Ohio guy who was highly respected in the state with previous ties to tOSU. People like to point to that hire whenever a lesser known coach is hired, but very few are remotely similar.

Which makes me wonder why Alvarez didn't reach out to Whitewater's coach to see if there'd be interest.

I think this is a big misconception with Wisconsin. They have NEVER recruited well. Case in point, Bret's best ranked class is his 2013 class, which is ranked 33rd in the nation. Alvarez never did much better. Wisconsin usually hovers around #50 or so. The key to success in Madison is pretty much walling off the state and retaining what little in-state talent is here, as well as the walk-on program that exists (Chris Maragos, JJ Watt, Jim Leonhard, etc.).

Now, from what I've heard, Andersen recruits very well, especially considering USU was one of the worst programs in D1 before he took over and has two other FBS schools in the state to compete with.

Primarily, I believe it was Glen Mason, and Mike Belotti.

This. And most fans thought Glen Mason was going to be the chosen one.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pd-maps-worldwide-edition/id337552456?mt=8who[/url] we thought he was (a sub .500 sub mid-major HC) with a really damn good defensive coordinator propping his incompetent lard ass up on the field and a top 5 all-time program propping his incompetent lard ass up on the recruiting trail... for the time being.

Bielema was an epic douchebag of the highest caliber and there is no arguing against that, but maybe he had a point regarding Wisconsin's willingness to put the resources needed in to taking the program to the next level.

Purely speculation on my part, but could it be that Alvarez has the attitude of "I did it with next to nothing and you can too or you're not a good coach." ?

I was 100% on board with letting Bielema go if he came in trying to leverage the Arkansas offer for more money that he didn't deserve, but this extremely underwhelming HC hire kinda reinforces Biff's point about Alvarez and $ at Wisconsin, no?

It certainly looks like money is an issue, and it's probably coming straight from the guy holding the purse strings, in my opinion.
Money may be a very BIG issue. I've been hearing lots of tales of devastating cuts in UW funds, faculty pensions, R&D funding, salaries etc. to the point that profs are going elsewhere. While that wouldn't mean shit in Tuscalosa, it means a great deal in Madison.

Wow I didn't realize the ultimate super power conference in college football sent four coaches to the Pro's.

Well, I don't know about the specifics, but the university has undergone cuts, much like many other colleges across the country. Then there was the battle over collective bargaining that took place here in 2011 that no doubt had an impact on UW.

But I don't know how much impact this has on the athletic department, since I'm fairly certain it's separately funded.

I know personally of a tenured prof with big grant connections who lost half her pension in the last year thanks to cuts. Shes moved on to another school as a result. UW is not a place where you can drop tons on a fb coach when the faculty is being fed a shit sandwich. Walker is killing the goose that produced a good many golden eggs.

Yeah, Wisconsin is definitely going to have to make their dollars stretch in the coming years. It's a lean time for the university and the state as a whole as it tries to dig itself out of a big debt.

Would I have rather had Diaco or even Golden? Sure. But considering this was something of a thin candidate pool and it sounds like Wisconsin got him for a pretty good bargain, I have no problem with the hire.
