Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

Announcers in the AM-NW bowl game were bemoaning the problem of coaches being fired in early December, teams being coached by interim coaches for bowl games, and teams losing their coaches to new jobs before their bowl game. They said it is getting worse but failed to touch on why.

Perhaps the reason this problem has developed is because the bar to be "rewarded" with a bowl game is so low now mediocre teams get bids? Apparently, bowl committees are far more impressed by these teams' seasons than the universities themselves. But a 6-6 team with a large fan base is always more appealing than a winning team with a small one in the world of 35 bowl games, so this issue isn't going away.

I just found it funny that the talking heads seemed perplexed as to why this happens.

I get what the announcers were trying to say, but with the college calendar set up the way it is and National Signing Day as early as it is in February, its imperative if you're taking a new job to get there and get on the job as quick as possible, as bad as it sucks for the kids.

Simply put, there is no "good time" to leave a college coaching job. Its a 12 month a year committment and there's always something to be done.

...and because he's thinking "I've already been fired, so fuck it," Illinois' interim coach just decided to go for it on 4th down in their own end early in the 2nd quarter.

But it wouldn't happen nearly as often if mediocre teams weren't getting invited to play in bowl games.

 Putting aside your ongoing playoff battle, I am not seeing a meaningful difference between 5 & 8 weeks before signing day, particularly when many of those bowl delayed changes are announced near the end of the regular season anyway.

Early verbals are still screwed and late deciders still have time to make arrangements after a Dec or New Years change.

You're the one who turns every comment about bowl games into a "playoff battle", winslow. No one has said anything about a playoff here, or the last time you did this, either.

The fact is we could have a playoff AND bowl games making the either/or argument you're obsessed with projecting on others irrelevant, so maybe you can stop reading that into every comment about bowls and hijacking threads with it.

Now, back to coaching changes...

When did Jake say anything about recruiting or playoffs?

ESPN idiots observed that more bowl teams are using interim staffs. They seemed to imply that either more "decent teams" are firing their coaches when they don't deserve it, or that coaches are getting fired earlier than before.

Jake pointed out that the more likely reason is that more bad teams are getting into bowl games. That's all. The hiring and firing patterns are the same as they have always been the only difference is that more of these teams are ending up in bowl games because of ESPN's bloated bowl lineup.

The problem is you're not obsessed with debating playoffs with me so you don't read that shit into everything I post with the word "bowls" in it.

Thanks for actually reading what I said.

I misread his previous post and am waving the white flag on the reward topic.

I still don't see the bowl games changing anything for the kids, Darby (and I hate lousy bowl bids as much as the next guy, Gator included). There's no good time to do it. Fortunately the kids typically have 2 months after the announcement is made & 5 weeks after the official change occurs.
