1. JIM KNOWLES, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, OHIO STATE

As was hinted at in the Barnes entry, the one thing Ohio State lacked in 2021 was a consistent defense. The Buckeyes may be playing for a national championship with a better defensive effort. Thank goodness Knowles is on the way. He was named a Broyles Award finalist in 2021 after guiding Oklahoma State’s defense in a breakout season. The Cowboys finished fifth in the FBS in total defense, allowing just 297.5 yards per game. They allowed just 18.07 points per game, which ranked ninth nationally. Both of those numbers led the Big 12. Knowles certainly gets an upgrade in talent by making the move to Columbus. The limit to that defense’s potential does not exist with Knowles at the helm.

12. MATT BARNES, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, MEMPHIS

Matt Barnes has called the defensive plays since the home loss to Oregon

Barnes was thrust into a difficult spot with the Buckeyes this year. The longtime defensive backs coach was promoted to defensive coordinator following a Sept. 11 loss to Oregon. He did not have a full offseason to instill his philosophies. Nor was he able to jell with the rest of the defensive coaching staff in ways that coordinators typically should. Yet, Ohio State did show some marginal improvement despite those facts. Sure, the Rose Bowl and Michigan games leave sour tastes in the mouth but, under Barnes, Ohio State completely shut down a good Michigan State offense and held eight opponents to under 30 points. Barnes has a ton of potential as a coordinator and Memphis gives him the chance to really blossom.

The fact that two on this list include an incoming and outgoing coach for the same position (obvi, incoming being higher in the list than the outgoing) implies that this raises the IQ at both programs.

John Nash likes this.

Hue Jackson is a fucking clown, Vol. 5023477

This was bound to happen, IMO. Programs were just biding time to let his stench from BU scandal die down. And the 1st program to bite will take some heat, but if Grambling begins to win, Briles will be in prime position to get another HC gig. Going to an HBCU, where the fan base is small is a strategy he's willing to take, because he knows that winning will make fans forget about his past.
