Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

USC lost to 2-8 UCLA. They gotta admit Helton was a huge mistake at this point, yes?
I’d love to see someone resurrect that program, but I’m not sure who or how it could be done. The only sustained success they’ve ever had was under McCartney and, to an extent, Neiuheisel. Hard to believe that program was a legit national power for most of the nineties. Beautiful place to watch a game, too.

I like the Buffs and probably have a higher opinion of their program potential than most here, but Rick George needs to step away from the bong:

One thing about CU, I have never seen a bigger disconnect between the academic side of a university and the athletic department. The academics hate the football program, either out of jealousy, snobbery or whatever. It goes way back too, even before Gary Barnett soured things even more. I just don't see how you can build a winning program in that culture.

True as that may be, I think that the Athletic Department can largely ignore it. Although it may be part of a bigger problem, which is convincing recruits that white, moneyed. elitist Boulder is a cool place to be for people who often aren't any of those things or are maybe only the first of the three.

So, you are saying that the majority of this group site meets one of the three?

Ive never understood the attraction to Boulder... it's a big college town using city law to force a small town feeling.
The result is a huge divide where money rises to the top... and emphasizes the elitism in new ways. Throw in a hostile PD, the absolute necessity to recruit out of State, no conference opponents in Texas ..... what kid is gonna leave Cali coast for that? The PAC is loaded with top rate schools in big cities like Seattle, LA, SanFran where 'elitist' is usually just the empty grumbling of feudalist loving trash living in 3rd world states. Unlike Boulder, where the city is kept artificially small in the face of massive expansion across all of Denver metro in my lifetime.

Much as it made sense to dump the little10 from an academic and cultural sense, nobody needs the PAC to poach some of those schools more than CU... they desperately need a pool of talent other than CA.
If they were smart, theyd start a rivalry with Baylor. They could call it Gnostics vs Creationists. Buffs vs Bears.
I say Baylor bc since the Ken Starr / Briles debacle... CU would have a chance to consistently win away and look good in Texas.

Mark Whipple ‘stepping down’ as UMass makes head coaching change official

It took a little longer than expected to officially announce but the school confirmed on Wednesday evening that Mark Whipple is “stepping down” as head coach at UMass.

News of the school letting him go first surfaced on Tuesday after the team wrapped up a 4-8 campaign over the weekend with a 66-27 loss to Georgia.

“I want to thank Mark for his commitment to our football program for 11 years. He came back to UMass when this program needed a strong leader and respected mentor,” AD Ryan Bamford said in a statement. “Mark provided the steady hand we needed in our early years as an FBS program and leaves our program in much better standing than when he came back in 2014. His legacy is not only cemented in his 65 wins and our 1998 FCS national championship, but in the way he positively impacted hundreds of young men in his program.”

“I want to thank the UMass family for the opportunity of being the head football coach for 11 seasons,” said Whipple in a statement. “I especially want to thank our coaches, players, support staff and football alumni for their tireless efforts and support. I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to help foster the growth of our student-athletes during these 11 years!”
