I don't know how service time manipulation works exactly, but it seems to me that Bobby Bradley and Daniel Johnson are both being held back for that reason. Jake Bauers and Ben Gamel are absolutely of no value whatsoever other than to fill a gap.
Maybe you're right on all counts. I guess what I am saying is I think, given the opportunity, Bradley and Johnson would right now be better, more productive players than their counterparts. Gamel and Bauers are journeyman vets that have not played well for Cleveland, and I doubt either of them is going to have a .700 OPS this season no matter how many games they play.No argument with your assessment of Bauers, but I really doubt they’re playing any service time games with Bradley. Tito seems to have little appreciation for Tribe 1B prospects (recall how he handled Jesus Agular) and Bradley strikes out about 1 in 3 ABs (that’s high even in today’s game). I think they really want to see Bradley perform longer and better at AAA before giving him a shot.
Gamel at least has a history of being a slightly better than replacement value 4th OF. He hasn’t even played 10 games for Cleveland so maybe it’s too early to say he has no value? Johnson has barely played above AA (84 games at Cbus in ‘19 and 5 with Cleveland in ‘20) so it’s not unreasonable to at least have him get some more experience.
The Indians have certainly played the service time game with several players in the past. Know any team that hasn’t? I just don’t think that’s their primary motive in these cases.
