i heard a stat on sports radio today that last year MLB salaries, cumulatively increased 5.4% for the 2013 season, the largest single season jump ever. And FA this year is outpacing last year by a long shot. the largest spending per player, at over $8 million per player, was of course, the yankees.
Well Ells has at least been an elite player for certain short stretches of time he has been healthy...the Donger isn't anything more than a serviceable outfielder. He's just a guy.And I don't paricularly remember last year being out of control... at least to the degree that I was thinking, "You're gonna give that guy how much?" I can see giving monster deals to Zach Grienke and Josh Hamilton... and least at the time, but Choo and Ellsbury? ummmm... uhhhh... yeah.

Oh I agree, Hamilton had 3 other worldly seasons, so he would have been worth more in theory (I wasn't sold he would be much if he left that park in Texas, but that's beside the point). But I'd take 3 bills and 50 steals over anything Choo offers...and I don't think Ells is worth anything near the contract they offered the Donger either.Ells was good for a year, and it was an exceptional one, but, Hamilton was 5 years of shock and awe. Point is he's a nice player that can be a very good player if he's on the filed, Hamilton is (or was going into last season) a bona fide scare the piss out of you middle of the order hitter.
Choo, I mean, I can't even fathom why they'd give him that kind of scratch....
Upgrade over Rich Hill. I'll take it. And he presumably won't strike out as often as Stubbs. Personally, I'm pretty ok with the Tribe staying clear of the FA market this year.... when teams are throwing 5 mill a year at lefty relievers (that aren't really even set up guys) and Choo is turning down 140 mill... don't get yourself in that mess.
All those millions can buy a lot of Pabst...or Red Stripe...Rangers better keep an eye on him.
It really is. He and Ellsbury getting those contracts is MLB officially jumping the shark.7 years $130 million for a guy whose defense has been falling off of a cliff recently, still doesn't hit lefties well, has injury issues, and is already a few years north of 30? Mlb is a joke.
The last two teams that have gone on offseason spending sprees, the Angels and Toronto, flopped massively. There's something to be said about a fundamentally solid team with chemistry. All the millions in the world doesn't buy that, and all these GMs just cannot seem to figure that out.the best part is the teams that are throwing around these ridiculous amounts of money aren't getting any better. The last thing the Rangers needed was another injury prone outfielder, they need pitching.
the Skankees have the oldest infield in the MLB and that's assuming that Tex, ARoid and Brian Roberts even play, which also ignores that Jeter only played 20 games last year at short.
Teams like the White Sox have a top-10 payroll and will lose 90+ games. the money being thrown around is ridiculous, but it's not like it's really improving anyone (yet).

While true, the main problem is that idiot spending still inflates the market to the point that mid market teams looking to make limited fa acquisitions still can't do so.
