Cleveland Indians Thread of Malaise (2014 Season)

I doubt that. The way he pitched down the stretch, I'll be surprised if he doesn't get a 4 year deal around $15M per from somebody.
and that is why I do not follow MLB that much. I cannot keep track of who plays for who. Take me back to the 50s and possibly even the 60s with no free agency and very few trades especially in the 50s. That is just crazy money.

I wonder how much money the Yankees are going to spend with the Ellsbury signing and Cano supposedly asking for around $250 mil. They might not be able to afford the Big "O".
Looking less and less like Cano will be resigned. Seattle's supposedly ready to back the Brinks truck up for him. Something ridiculous like 8Years/$200+Mil (which is assinine)...

Could one big deal painted in pinstripes lead to another? [With Jacoby Ellsbury] set to arrive in New York Wednesday for his physical, after essentially agreeing to a stunning, seven-year, $153 million contract with the Yankees, [Robinson Cano] departing The Bronx for the Pacific Northwest seems like more of a possibility than it did 24 hours ago. ... [With] Ellsbury set to draw such a huge paycheck and the Yankees still in need of two starting pitchers, their threat to stick at seven years and $170-ish million for Cano seems more legitimate. So if the Mariners, profoundly desperate for offensive production, offered, say, eight years and $214 million for Cano? Another $44 million guaranteed, when Jay Z is trying to establish himself as a force in athlete representation?

They need pitching in the WORST way, and they can't afford to sign a couple of starters and Cano.

The Jankees are the example of how NOT to build a team nowadays. They throw money away on aging FAs, and they don't develop squat. Cano is by FAR the best player to come out of their system since the 90's, and their stupid spending/lack of developing players looks like it's pricing them out of resigning him. These new Steinbrenner's aren't as free with the cash as pops was. Their roster is a mess, their farm system is barren, and they are in pretty bad shape. They're the Jankees, so they'll still spend. Just not enough to turn a roster like they did 4-6 years ago.

Looks like the Indians will be searching the scrap heap for guys coming off of injuries again...Brett Anderson was mentioned in the CPD this morning as a trade possibility...with a bum arm and an ERA over 6 last year, he comes with a bargain 8 million salary

they didn't sign swisher, bourn, or any of their other FA's last year, save for reynolds before the first of the year. no reason to think this year will be different, especially with the asshole spending that's going on right now.

Agreed; when guys like Ellsbury are getting $22,000,000 a year that's not something we will ever compete with - we'll sit back and wait for those we can afford that fall into our laps. Although sometimes that doesn't even work, i.e. Bourn....ugh. Regret!

yeah, but comparing the production of Ellsbury and the prodcution of Bourn THEN looking at the comparative salaries... I mean its not a 10 million spread and Bourn is only a year older(ish).

yeah that is because all the good ones were gone by then. Even Minnesota is talking about spending some major money.

it's more about getting value for your money. based on their respective contracts, will the indians get more value from swisher than the yankees will get from ellsbury? probably. is swisher a better player overall? probably not. that's just the reality of MLB.

Looking like '14 has a good chance for the Bullpen From Hell, Part 2 (3? 4?...) While innings pitched is probably not much of tool to measure quality, it does show the scale of the total rebuild that must occur. Take a look at the quantity of pen innings the Indians need to replace due to free agency/DFA moves. Pen innings pitched in '13: Perez 54; Smith 63; Hill 38.2; and Albers 63. Those of us who watched also recall that those guys pitched for the vast majority of the pressure innings of the season. Well, ok....maybe not Hill so much: his innings were pressure because he nearly always made them that way.

Of course, if the Tribe's starters pitched more innings, that would take up some of the pen's work. But in '13 no starter pitched over 200 innings. Masterson came closest at 193. After him? Ubado (182.2)... then Kazmir (158) and both gone to free agency. Then came Kluber (147.1) and McAllister (134.1). Masterson, Kluber and McAllister all spent part of last season on the DL so it seems likely that the Indians will stick to their usual year to year increase limits of 10 to 20% for each of them. Salazar had 52 ML innings and 93 in Akron and Columbus and is also likely to be limited to the 10 to 20% increase. Plus, what are the odds that none of these pitchers ends up on the DL next year? So, rather than expecting more innings from the starters, without adding a starting workhorse pitcher or two it seems more likely that the pen will have more innings to work in '14.

I just can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading about what the Indians' plans are for the pen in '14, especially the guys suggested for closer. CC Lee has pitched 4.1 ML innings....none of which were really in any pressure situations. Cody Allen has 2 ML saves and a whole 3 career minor league saves. Both are decent pitchers but can either be ready to take on that?

From the moved on Joe Smith: the Tribe's remaining pen guys need to "step up" next year. In other words, Smith does not believe the Indians plan on bringing in other pitchers. I don't believe that. They will make the usual dumpster dives and, most likely, sign the last free agent closer left on the market...unless it's Perez. Plus I expect Cabby and/or an outfielder (Bourn is my best guess) will be traded for somebody's better level AAA pitcher or a couple guys who had down years in '13 and a low A starter who just had Tommy John. But without a couple "lightening in a bottle" moves, the Bullpen from Hell will be back!
