Cleveland Indians (official 2012 season)

With 3 hours to go before the deadline, local media is indicating that the Indians will stand pat, guaranteeing they will be a 78-84 team for next year and into the future. Woot.

Whatever. They would've fucked up any moves they made anyway. This franchise is a mess.

Well their big move was to send our only knuckleballer, who looked like he had promise, to Boston for a guy hitting .259 in AAA. Outstanding. :slappy:

Yea WTF, a decent minor league pitcher who could have some MLB value....for another Matt LaBusta caliber bust player in Lars Anderson (was BAs #17 prospect in 2009 but hasent amounted to [Mark May])

this about says it all

TonyIPI ...it is really hard to stay positive and defend some of these roster decisions over the last 12 months. Fans have a right to be upset.

 Welcome to Cleveland

Word in Pawtucket is Lars is slow-footed, rolls over on breaking balls and hits into a lot of double plays.

just what we needed

I would had taken no moves at all over this derpa derp one

not that Steven Wright is a top prospect or anything, but theres no justification in trading a guy who has shown some promise from a unique stance (knuckleballer) for a guy who has been a flop from all regards

Lars is perfect for what the Tribe bigwigs think they need. Seems pretty clear that the "window of opportunity" for this team, if it ever had one, is now closed and it's time to rebuild...again. It will be, at least, several years before this team can compete and after the egg laid by this year's team fan attendance is going to drop to mid-80s levels for the next couple seasons. So they need to cut costs to the bone while trying to accumulate some talent.

And that's why Lars is what they think they need: he's CHEAP. He's not eligible for arbitration until 2015 and won't be a free agent until 2018. Instead of paying $3M for 1B, like they did with Kotchman, they can toss Lars out there for ML minimum, continuing to put Santana there as often as possible. They had nobody at AAA who was ready to move up; LaBusta will become a free agent after this year. Will Lars be any good? Probably not, but he most likely won't be much worse than many of the other stiffs that have played 1B for the Indians in the past 25+ years.

Looks like next season the Tribe could start players earning at or near minimum salary at 1B, 3B, LF and RF. Kipnis and Brantley will be rewarded, somewhat, for this season, but they'll still be cheap labor. Santana will be overpaid for his production and Cabrerra is still cheap compared to his peers.

Dolan Dollars=Cheap Team

There's just no way to describe how stupid this move was. Now, will Wright win 300 games? Uh, no. But I bet Boston can get something done with him since they have the history with Wakefield. Meanwhile it appears that either A) Santana is now your 2013 every day 1B/DH and is now a backup catcher, or B) Well, there is no fucking B, because this clown is not going to play in the majors ever. It's like they made a fucking move just to say they made one..."see, we didn't stand pat at the trade deadline". What a bunch of toolsheds.

Tribe history dictates that they will use Santana just like they used Sandy Alomar and Victor Martinez: mostly at catcher, occasionally at 1B and rarely at DH. In their terms, that provides the "highest position value." They've chosen several times to sacrifice defense and offense at 1B to have this mostly C and some 1B approach. Like they did with Alomar and Martinez, they'll use Santana this way to maximize his trade value before he becomes a free agent. Santana's a free agent in 2017 unless the team exercises an option for that season. So, expect him to be traded around 2016.

Baring injury or (please, please!) the sale of the team, Lars will be the Opening Day 1B in 2013.
