Cleveland Indians (2013 Season)

Actually that's exactly what that stat says, that he doesn't attempt to take the extra base. If he weren't a catcher it might bother me... I guess all it says to me is dont' put Stubbs, Bourn, Brantley, or Kipnis behind him in the lineup, he might get lapped.

and it's odd. he's not fast by any stretch, but he's not slow for a catcher. how much of it was the first base coach, who knows.

Since he's a catcher, its hard to know how he's feeling at any moment too. (I don't think anyone is gonna get on Buster Posey who is also on the list), so, yeah, sore knees sore back, whatever, best to keep him on the field. First base coach would be aware of that, also, if we're talking singles to doubles here, and presumbaly we are for the most part, that's in front of the player and their decision to make usually.

I know that $100,000 is not much in major league baseball but I have never heard of a retention bonus before. Sort of interesting.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Tito Francona says it's much too early to start talking about who the Indians' fifth starter will be.

"It's wide open right now," he said.

Managers are supposed to say things like that when there's more than two weeks left in spring training. If the truth be told, the last spot in the rotation is left-hander Scott Kazmir's to lose.

What does that mean for Daisuke Matsuzaka, Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer? For Kluber, Carrasco and Bauer it probably means a trip to Class AAA Columbus. For Matsuzaka it could mean a date with Article XX (B) of the new basic agreement.

The article says a big-league free agent with six years service time, in camp on a minor-league deal, must be added to the opening day roster five days before the season starts or released. If he's not released, the Indians must offer him a $100,000 retention bonus and the right to opt out of his contract on June 1 if he's in the minors.

Reliever Matt Capps and DH Jason Giambi are in the same situation as Matsuzaka.

I guess Dice-K will not be making the Indians opening day roster and who is this guy Matt Carson:huh: It is because of guys like him that I don't want to keep Giambi unless Carson is a rookie and should be playing every day in the minors.

Classic journeyman. Not anyone to get exited about. Used to play with Oakland.

*EDIT* AKAK beat me to it.

In fairness to Matt Carson, he's never been caught stealing in his career.

Here's the thing with Giambi.

It would be one thing if, for some reason, anyone really felt like keeping a guy like Carrera would lead to him taking someone's job. Or actually competing for a spot. That's not going to happen. We know who the starters are.

Same with McGuiness... same with really everyone. They know who is going to be out there. That's why they got guys like Aviles, versatile guys that are there be the bench. The problem with McGuiness and Carrera etc, is that you're also pretty much stuck with them on your 25 all season just for the sake of keeping them.

Reality is, they've spent the money, not so much for this team to "win-it-all" now, but, for this team to compete and develop. In this "generation" of young guys, Chisenhall, Kipnis, Brantley and to a lesser extent because they are a little "older" (in experience) Santana and Cabrera are the core of this group. Zeke missed his window and they need to move forward with the group they have. If Giambi adds leadership to move them forward, that's what they need to do. The "development" of younger guys are going to be the guys that are in A ball, or whatever lower level they are at. McGuiness and Carrerra are "organizational depth" at this point, not saying that's not important, it is, but, they are most certainly not "the future."

I guess I was looking at it from a contribution aspect and the only thing that I see Giambi bringing is leadership. Not saying that that is not important but I just thought there might be some other guys who might be able to help out from a contribution standpoint.

However, your point is well taken.

From Underwood on FB:

Indians announce LHP Scott Kazmir be added to roster and start April 6th at Tampa Bay. Carlos Carrasco will start the season on roster and serve his 6-game suspension. Jason Giambi also makes the team but, will start year on 15-day DL with lower back strain (not serious).

:slappy: Giambi on the DL already...he really is replacing Hafner.
