Cleveland Indians (2013 Season)

MLB News: Indians to lower Progressive Field concession prices for 2013

February 28, 2013 by Scott 26 Comments
Already boasting one of the most affordable experiences in Major League Baseball, the Cleveland Indians announce that they will be rolling back prices on high-volume concession items for the 2013 season.
Often used by fans as an excuse to not attend games at Progressive Field, team president Mark Shapiro built off of last year’s “Fan Focused” concession plan and further reduced the prices of key items. Hot dogs will start at $3, representing a 33% reduction over 2012 prices; and 12-ounce domestic beers will be $4, a drop of up to 24% over last year. Both of these rollbacks will be available to fans for every game of the upcoming 2013 season.

My cousin took this sign to 8-10 games last year.

This would make a great deal of sense batting Cabrera in the second spot and Kipnis third. I like it a lot.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- There is plenty of time remaining this spring for Indians manager Terry Francona to decide on a batting order. If the early exhibition games are any indication, second baseman Jason Kipnis might be given a shot as the team's third hitter.

The Indians have their leadoff man established in center fielder Michael Bourn, and Francona has made it known that he is considering using switch-hitting shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera in the second slot. Kipnis has already been tested out in the three hole a few times.

Francona has not discussed the lineup with Kipnis.

"No, he hasn't," Kipnis said on Friday morning. "I know that we obviously have a great leadoff in Michael Bourn, and I know Tito has been hinting that he likes Cabrera, a switch-hitter, in the two hole. It's almost -- maybe I get the three hole by process of elimination."

First baseman Nick Swisher and catcher Carlos Santana -- both switch-hitters -- are possibilities for the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

It seems that Francona thinks very highly of Giambi. I just don't want him taking a roster spot for one of the younger guys who might help out in the future.

With the love fest between Francona and Giambi I think he's locked in as one of our bench guys.

The battle for the last spot is between Raburn, Carrera, and Gomes. I can see them going with Raburn due to his versatility.

Francona also said Ubaldo will be the #2 barring something crazy, no shocker there.

I actually don't mind Giambi - yes, his impact on the field will be minimal but the impact on the clubhouse with all the young guys will be well worth it. Chemistry is horribly underrated I think and the "mojo" is adding up with this team.

I'm sorry but Giambi is waiting to be the next Hafner. I want to be wrong, but he's old, creaky, streaky, and not particularly useful as anything but a DH or PH. The reason I don't want him really is that Carrera is out of options, and why not go with someone like him and/or a Chris McGuiness and/or McDade, who they will likely lose if they don't make the roster (at least 2 of them, Carrera is out of options and I forget which we have to offer back at 25k if we don't keep him)...yes, they may suck too, but they are young and may have some upside...with Giambi you know what you're getting, and he is way, way past the downside already.

Love the look of the lineup, but not crazy about the bench.

Well, let's be honest, the Bench was the lineup last year.

I had to deal with some dumbass Red's fan yesterday that had to tell me that Drew Stubbs was replacing Choo... and as a result, the Tribe is screwed... but, is that the case? And I thought, and I thought and realized he was right about the replacing part... just not the screwed part. (offensively)

If you go position by position you get:

C- Santana - Same as last year, which is ok.
1B- Swisher - Replaces some combination of Casey Kotchman and "Bench"
2B- Kipnis - Same as last year, which again, is ok.
SS- Out of Shape Cabrera replaced by in shape Cabrera. Think of it as Gettign Carlos Baerga back from fat camp and with actual defensive skills.
3B - Chisenhall - Replaces, again.. "Bench" (Even if Bench includes himself, at least part of Bench isn't a placeholder anymore)
LF - Brantley - Replaces "Bench" even though he would have played there himself, except that he had to play CF because that spot in the Payroll was taken by Grady Sizemore. For those of you who forgot where the money cam from to sign...
CF- Michael Bourn who replaces Michael Brantley who was covering for "Bench" or the 60 Day DL, whichever
RF - Drew Stubbs - Replaces Choo. And here we are, in the only position that's not getting upgraded or staying the same. (Except defensively)

Oh, and DH, which of course is "Bench" Replacing "Bench"

So, as for Giambi, if he can play about 30 games at first, I'm fine. If not, yeah, get someone who can. Hell, let Cord Phelps do it, I don't care.

I just think keeping Giambi is a waste of a roster spot for one of the younger guys. I think this veteran leadership in the clubhouse is a little overblown. If you have a bunch of young guys why would they want some old guy like Giambi around telling them what to do. I thought that was Francona's job.
6. If Jason Giambi has a strong spring, the Indians will be in a roster bind. They still like Zeke Carrera for outfield depth, even though they have three starters (Michael Bourn, Drew Stubbs and Michael Brantley) who can run -- Carrera's strength. He batted .272 last season (.707 OPS) for the Tribe, with one homer in 147 at bats. He's 25 and out of minor-league options. He would have to clear waivers to go to the minors, and they believe a team will claim him.

7. A Rule 5 draftee from Texas, first baseman Chris McGuiness also has been impressive. He has to make the team or be offered back to the Rangers for $25,000. It may come down to Giambi, Carrera or McGuiness for the final roster spot.

Of course I completely left out Reynolds. Worst part is, no one even busted me out for it.

Well, then I nailed it.

Edit: Actuallly at the time I was going to work him into 3rd and 1st and DH, but, it got complicated (only to me) and I ended up leaving him out while I scarmbled to bring the whole thing back to Giambi.

If we keep Giambi and send some of our young guys back to the minors or lose them, I will be very upset with Francona. Also, someone mentioned clubhouse leaders. We do have Swisher and he probably can relate to the younger guys better than a 42-year-old has been.

to me it comes down to would you rather have giambi up here to DH occasionally, and pinch hit OR would your rather have a young player up here who will play once a week and maybe pinch run or DH?

Id rather have Giambi up here if he can still hit (i will put my trust in francona on this) and rot on the bench while the younger player can be in AAA getting everyday at bats...then around the half point we can send Giambi down or release him and bring the young player up

As yoyoyooyoyoyoyyoin said, yeah, the question is probably more to the "or lose them" side than the "back to the minors" thing. It may be more beneficial to some to play every day.
