Unless some pretty big moves are made before the season begins, I do not share your optimism because we do not have any quality starters and we still need a designated hitter not to mention the fact that we have a lot of strikeouts in our starting lineup.Hmm, I think these moves are actually moving them closer to being a half solid club. It is the IndiansCLEVELAND, Ohio -- Russ Canzler is back. At least for a while.
The Indians reclaimed Canzler on waivers from Toronto on Wednesday after designating him for assignment Dec. 18, when they officially signed first baseman Mark Reynolds.
Right-hander Jeanmar Gomez was designated for assignment to make room for Canzler.
If Canzler stays on the roster, he'll become the leading candidate to fill the vacant designated hitter's role. Outside of Rule 5 Draft pick Chris McGuiness; Mike McDade, a waiver claim from Toronto; extra outfielder Ezequiel Carrera; and Matt LaPorta, still recovering from hip surgery and out of options, there are not a lot of in-house options for that spot.
They probably will reclaim Gomez in about a week and the PD will print a article saying that he might be the Indians #1 starter this coming seasonSort of surprised they gave up on Gomez, I thought they were higher on him. But I guess Brett Myers solves all of the pitching problems
I would have traded Perez and used this Myers as my closer or setup guy to Vinnie. I mean the guy did not have one start last season and the season before that when he was a starter does not look very good on paper. I will admit that it looks like he can eat up some innings but like you said or $7 mil you would have thought they could have gotten something else. I know no one else... just anything.I can't knock the addition of Myers at all, he's a quality starter or in a worst case scenario RP. The $7 mill is the tough part to swallow though.
He'll eat innings and it wasn't long ago he was Top 10 for the Cy Young (okay, he was 10th, but I'm still counting it). He can at least help bridge until Carrasco is back and Bauer is on his innings cap.

January 4, 2013 4:14 pm ET The Yankees have claimed first baseman/outfielder Russ Canzler off waivers from the Indians, the team announced Friday.
Canzler, who played for the Indians in 2012, was just re-claimed by them a few days ago, but he was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for free-agent signing Brett Myers.
The 26-year-old Canzler hit .269/.299/.398 in 97 plate appearances with the Indians in 2012, but has fared much better in the high levels of the minors in his career.
The Yankees, who will have to clear a 40-man-roster space for Canzler, did not immediately announce a corresponding move.
IndiansCLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians have signed pitchers Scott Kazmir, Jerry Gil and Edward Paredes to minor league deals and invited them to spring training with the big league club. Pitchers and catchers report to Goodyear, Ariz., on Feb. 10.
Kazmir, 28, is a two-time All-Star, who is 66-61 with a 4.17 ERA in 179 starts in his career. The left-hander has not pitched in the big leagues since 2011. He spent last year pitching in the independent Atlantic League.
Gil, 30, made it to the big leagues as an infielder for Arizona in 2004 and Cincinnati in 2007 before converting to a pitcher in 2008. The right-hander is 23-26 with 22 saves and a 5.63 ERA in 205 games in the minors since the conversion. Last season he went 7-1 with nine saves and a 4.92 ERA in 58 appearances for Class AAA Las Vegas, Toronto's top farm team.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Gil just finished pitching winter ball for Estrellas. He earned eight saves and posted a 1.52 ERA. In 24 games, covering 23 2/3 innings, he struck out 20.
Paredes, 26, pitched in Seattle's organization from 2005 through 2011. He just finished pitching for Estrellas as well in the Dominican. The left-hander went 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA. He struck out 10, walked eight and allowed three earned runs in 14 innings. Lefties hit .174 (4-for-23) against him.
