Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

Eh, at worst it was a lateral move. Yeah, they suck ass and are an undisciplined mess, but it's not like there's much talent to work with. I suspect once they drop far enough back in the standings (if the rest of the division can get it together enough for that to happen), we'll see an influx of warm bodies from Columbus.

The shocking thing is how horribly Sizemore has regressed the past couple years. He was always a free swinger, but at least he used to take some walks and make contact, now it's like he's up there hacking with a toothpick...
That's the problem the whole division sucks so they might never fall that far behind and the front office will use that as an excuse not to bring up the guys from the farm system.

Yeah, Sizemore was too good to be true and after he hit his first home run he finished himself. Plus, they have nobody worth trading except maybe a couple of their pitchers so it looks like we are stuck in rebuild mode for another millennium.

Well, that's the rub. The division is a mess, so it's concievable they could tread water and remain in contention until late into the season. But, with what they're working with now, if Detroit continues to play at, or a little above, .500...they'll start to drop back 8-10 games within a month IMO. That's when changes will start to happen. My guess is that their thinking is that if they caught lightining in abottle with these guys for six weeks to start, it could happen again. That's not impossible, but certainly doesn't look likely.

As far as rebuilding for another millenium, I'll disagree there. There's a good amount of talent in Columbus and Akron, so once they start moving that way, we'll start to see some returns. I'm not overly upset, I never expected to be anything remotely near competitive (even in a weak division) this season, so at least we got six good weeks. And, in the end, leaving some of these guys in C-bus longer might be better for their development. Yeah, they're terrible right now, maybe worse than some anticipated, but you also have to look at the fact that they've been pretty dinged up. It sucks to see Sizemore regree so badly, but frankly, I never personally saw him as a long-term part of this team's plans.

you know how I feel about prospects:) because I have seen too many of them over the years with the Indians. I guess I just get tired of waiting year after year regarding all Cleveland sports teams.

They built for their runs runs '94-'01 and '05-'08 mostly through the farm and younger players acquired in trades, same way they're doing it now. Unfortunately in today's MLB, that is the only way smaller market teams can do it. The Tribe has been pretty successful as far as those types have gone. Once they get a good young base in place, they'll start supplementing that with free agents...not necessarily big names, but complimentary guys around the core they're developing. We just have to cross our fingers and hope guys like Chis, Phelps, Santana, Kipnis, Hagadone, White, Pomeranz, et al develop.

The problem is the FA they brought in this year that are supposedly "complimentary guys" suck pole...Hannahan, OK, I like his D, I actually don't think he was an awful stopgap signing, and he can always be a late game replacement, so him on the roster I'm cool with. But Orlando Cabrera? Travis Buck? Shelly Duncan? AUSTIN FUCKING KEARNS? They're going to have to do a whole lot better than that.

you do realize that buck, kearns and duncan were all signed to minor league deals right? they weren't necessarily signed with the intention of being every day players. it just so happened that grady and choo have missed substantial time combined and nobody in the minors is worth bringing up.
